Hi masterchef,
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is the foundation for most IBD diets that are out there. The theory behind the Diet is to control the bacteria/yeast/micorbes in your gut by eating certain foods. SCD was decades ahead of its time.

Patman,
I'm new to the community here and indeed noticed right off your postings are really insightful. your experience is without parallel and it's great that you are offering alternatives to traditional medicines.
Something was mentioned about a Carbohydrate Specific diet. what is that?
Also Patman, I have had quite the journey with my Crohn's and am getting it very much under control after years of difficulty. you seem to be at a stage ahead however and would really love to hear about your stepwise process. i am trying to put together some coherent information for patients newly diagnosed and/or struggling to get to where you are. while everyone reacts differently, i think many can gain from your insight.
especially about nutrition, dietary supplements, eating habits etc... these topics GI specialists tend to ignore as more voodoo science, but i'm on your side. i think these are the biggest factors in managing the disease.

Hello, Patman75. I have been following your posts here and there and wondered if you follow the Specific Carbohydrate Diet or something else. I was diagnosed almost a year ago (with Crohns) and I really dont feel much better after all the meds that have been prescribed to me.
What has been your approach to diet changes? I know you are seeing a nutritionist, but did you make the changes "cold turkey," or was it more of a gradual change. It all seems so daunting, especially giving up bread and rice.
I am just beginning to look into diet now and I think I want to start with omega 3s (although I have to be careful since I am on a blood thinner) and probiotics. I already know my GI will not be open to any of it. He strictly follows the medical textbook and does not think outside the box.

I'm just trying to help and show all the options to treating/healing IBD.
For too long I just accepted what my GI told. No one knows the cause of IBD. There is no cure. What you eat doesn't matter. I suffered for over 3 years. Then I had had finally had enough and started looking around.
It all started when I went to my first CCFA support group. They talked about a young boy who used to go to the meeting but doesn't anymore. He saw a neuropath and got better. Well that sure got my attention.
A little over a year later I see a nutritionist, I have radically changed my diet, added omega3, probiotics and antioxidant supplements. I have read at least 10 books and spend way too much time reading medical research and other internet info on IBD. I have had ups and downs but everything lately has been up up up. A lifetime of eating the wrong foods and being exposed to antibiotics and other environmental factors will not heal overnight. Natural healing takes time but the payoff is amazing.
My quality of life has improved sooo much.
