college and UC

Thu, March 26, 2009 1:06 PM

I'm having a hard time with college.  This is my third semester of school with UC, and each time semester I believe I won't get sick.  So far, this hasn't been the case (the last two semesters I ended up in the hospital for lenghy stays).  Last week, I was too tired to go to class-couldn't get out of bed!!  I missed a midterm in one of the classes and the professor hasn't been very nice about it, since I didn't tell him at the start of the semester of my "disability".  Any advice?

Thanks for your replies.  I had to withdraw from one of my classes but am still in the others.  I enrolled with the disablitity service and they have been very helpful.   It sure is frustrating at the slow pace I have to take for school, but Ill finish it eventually.  Thanks again!!

Don't feel bad I am right there with you.  I got Crohn's Disease in 2004 and have been trying to get my 2 year degree since.  So far this semester I was in the hospital for 9 days due to a reaction from Remicade and have had several flare ups.  I am starting a new medication and its not in my system yet so I spent all last week in the bathroom and there was no way I could drive to class or sit through class.  I filled for Disabilty Services with the school last week.  You may want to do that if you haven't already.  I have some instructors that aren't that happy about all of the class I have missed, but I can't help it.  Just hang in there, I have.  I am determined to get my degree no matter how long it takes.  I wish you the best of luck with everything!!!

My daughter who had UC is in college.  She did take 2 classes online and said Health class online was easy but Music online was very hard.  Online classes do sound good though.  My thought was to contact the disability office on campus.  They are so helpful.  You can take tests at another place and take your time so if you do need to get up and go to the bathroom, you are excused.  Check it out.  I think you'll find it so helpful.

Hi there, have you thought about online classes? You can be in your own home. It requires some self motivation to get things done. I took classes online when I wasn't feeling well and I loved it!! It was a weight off my shoulders and I got straight A's. It is a long time sitting at the computer for some classes, but it is worth it. You won't miss assignments or tests. You can virtually do any reading, article searching, write papers, talk to classmates, be present for open forums via internet. It is awesome. Most of all no-one has to know your problem. Depending on what you are majoring in, some online classes are harder than others, but you may want to give it a try. Start with 1 class and see if you like it. Good luck!
