Sushi and UC

Fri, March 27, 2009 12:00 AM

Hi!

I am newly diagnosed with UC (Jan 09) and still not in remission, but feeling much better.  I love sushi and was wondering if people seem to be able to tolerate raw fish with UC, and if so, are there certain kinds that work bette than others?

Thanks!

The only thing to watch out for with sushi is to AVOID SESAME SEEDS! You may also want to try it in small amounts to see what you can tolerate. I have Crohn's and I love sushi and have no problems tolerating it as long as it does not have sesame seeds on it.

I have never had a problem eating sushi and I have been living with Crohn's for 11 years. In fact, when I have had a flair and ate sushi, it was one of the things that didn't bother me as much. I would just watch out and make sure that you get it from a really reputable place, super fresh place.

The problem is that sushi usually has horseradish in it. THAT might indeed set you off, I would guess.

I have read mixed reviews on raw fish.

For me every time I have raw tuna my UC is not active the next day.

Some fish are high in Omega 3 fats that are good for reducing inflamation.

Other longer lived fish have higher amounts of mercury so you generally want to stay away from them or reduce your intake of them.

This chart gives mercury levels in fish.

Never eat farm raised fish, they are high in toxic chemicals and are high in Omega 6 fats.

I hope this helps.
