organic foods

I'm not sure if this topic has been posted here.  I couldn't find anything on a search so . . . Has anyone tried a strict diet of organic food with positive results?  I am currently reading a book about the food industries and I am upset by what is being put in/on our foods.  Some of the subjects discussed are antibiotics and growth hormones in our meats and dairy products, pesticides in/on our produce, and genetically modified foods (which are genetically altered to resist insects) just to name a few.  I'm starting to wonder if this could be the reason so many of us have digestive issues.  Do any of the popular diets for CD/UC address this issue?  Just thought I would throw the topic out there.

I just read your blog and it is very sweet the way you take care of your husband and make him all kinds of delicious and healthy foods. It is also very informative. Thanks!

Last year I had, had enough with 5 years of a constant flare and the Dr that I was seeing at the time (really didnt know what else to do) I put matters in my own hands. I found an amazing Dr and at the same time I decided to start eating differently more organic/natural.
So when I go grocery shopping I buy only things that I can pronounce even packaged items if I cant read the ingredients I dont buy it.
It not only cut my grocery bill down within a months time I started noticing a big difference even my husband joined in and he lost weight and felt better to and he didnt have a problem.
I drink Herba Mate tea and take a probiotic along with my meds. (asacol and rowasa at night) I was on a cortenema for about 9 months to stop the flare which did the trick.
So really I think it was a combination of both that helped me.
If you think its to expensive to shop organic look at your local grocers they are starting to provide more organic which is nice.
Trust me you still have to have a treat once in a while so if you enjoy that drive through cheese burger go for it once in a while. But I will be honest with you I really dont crave treats that much any more.

Hi there,

I used to eat 85% organic.  There are somethings I could not find in my area.  I felt much better then.  The rule of thumb is root veggies, berries,  dairy, eggs, and meats/fish/poultry are the ones that really need to be organic. I try to use Stevia (Truvia) as much as possible. I also followed a (no offense to anyone, but this is the easiest way to describe) non kosher Jewish diet.  I really have to get back into this eating style.  I know that probiotics work.  Some aloe supplements can increase diaherra. This has to do with how much "green" is in them.  Hmmm, I really need to go back to my old way of life.  Diet alone will not keep you from having a flare but I believe it will lessen the severity and the number of flares.  I also know that regular exercise helps. Stress reduction is a major flare preventer.  I could go on and on.  I quit all the above and I now have a colostomy.  I have spent 1/2 a mil on hospitals, drs, and meds since last October.  I really to practise what I preach.  Good luck all and be healthy.

This is a great question and I would like to see more discussion about these types of topics. I have stated before that I believe in following my doctor's advice. Beyond this, I think we should be as active as we can in maintaining our overall health because the body is a very complex system, and nutrition is crucial to good health.

I am still fairly new to this issue, so I have no idea if organic food has cured anybody, but there is increasing discussion about over processed and unhealthy foods. Recently, a local chiropractor lead a discussion on nutrition and the topic of organic came up. Organic food is very expensive. Her take on it was that all organic is best, but  if you had to pick a food to buy organic, pick meat and chicken that is grass fed, because we eat everything that animal has put in it's mouth. I like the concept of organic, and try to get it when I can, however, I live in an area where it is hard to find and very costly.

I think the jury is out about whether organic is the best way to go or not. Organic meat and dairy made sense to me, because who wants the extra hormones. Beyond that, I am personally not sure.

The human body is a complex organism and we are all subject to genetics, lifestyle, emotions, diet, environment, and I believe this is why everyone is different. It makes sense to me to do what we can to stay healthy, but it is impossible to predict individual outcome.
