Soy protein vs. Whey protein

Tue, April 21, 2009 4:54 PM

I'm trying to lose weight, and I find protein shakes convenient and easy to keep down during a flare-up.  I've read on various sites that whey protein is good if you have Crohn's.  Does anyone have any other info about whey protein, and is it better than soy protein? Anyone have experience with Isopure whey protein drink mixes?

I also have gastroparesis along with crohn's and IBS.  I am allergic to many foods including soy.  I have gained 30 lbs over the last year.  Some tell me it is due to starvation mode.  Would this possibly help with that?

I have Crohn’s disease of the stomach, as well as Gastroparesis ( part of my stomach is paralyzed)

Because my stomach can take up to 17 hours to digest one simple meal, I begin my days with a whey based protein shake , soy based cause me to have diarrhea… It may or may not be a problem to fro you one way or another. Sometimes I add things like yogurt or fruit to my shake, sometimes I don’t. I also added to my shake regiment for the day a product called Perfect Food ( bought at the health food store)

It provides my intestinal system with all the green veggie needs, plus enzymes and good bacterial for proper intestinal health. The rest of my day, I nibble my meals that are prepared as naturally as possible in our over processed world of food. By removing refine sugar products as well as adding veggie and fruit to my diet, and removing beef from my diet , I lost 23 lbs in three months with out really trying.

thanks- I am wanting to stretch my eating horizons but I am so scared to set off another flare.  I think I may definately try the berries as my next step-  you don't think the spinach would be to harsh?  Also would I use frozen or fresh?

in general i think soy protein is probably a better dietary choice since it's naturally infused with protein. I'm uncertain if whey protein has all the nutrients that will be beneficial for a balanced diet.

But that being said, if you're conscience of eating yogurt and getting your vitamin supplements from other sources, the all liquid diet, with whey protein or other protein shakes, is really light on the gut and probably very healthy. I have always wanted to do an all liquid diet, but have never been disciplined enough.

You can also consider protein supplement shakes, where you're using more natural ingredients and mixing them in a blender. I heard a recipe for a home made protein shake where you mix spinach, oatmeal, chocolate coated granola, blueberries, add soy milk and a scoop of chocolate protein powder, mix in a blender and it's delicious. Getting spinach, berries, and oatmeal in your shake would probably be helpful to add natural vitamins you may be missing in your diet.

I actually have been doing Isopure since January- I was diagnosed with UC in Dec.  I do real well with it.  I mix it with Almond milk, 2oz of coconut milk and a banana.  If I am feeling up to it I even throw in a scoop of frozen joghurt.  I blend it all up and it is actually my biggest "meal" of the day.  Sitting down to a big plate of solid food still doesn't work for me!  Good luck!
