Safe to get Pedicures or Manicures while on Remicade, Cimzia other immunosuppresents?

Since you are more at risk for Bacterial Infections is it safe to go to a nail salon and have pedicures or manicures?  I have been on Methotrexate for almost two years and I get my nails done regularly and pedicures sometimes in the Summer.  I will be switching medications and I was told that Methotrexate you are more at risk for Viral infections and Bacterial infections.  But with Remicade or Cimzia your chances of contracting bacterial infections is a bit greater?

Anyone have any experience or Opinions about that?

I actually decided to go on the Cimzia.  I haven't started it yet so I am crossing my fingers.  You know I actually never thought of money.  Maybe it's because I use my debit card for everything and rarley carry money so thats good I guess.  The last nail appointment I had I did my best to explain my situation.  There is a language barrier but she is a sweetheart andshe understood.  So she is aware of the gist of it.  I will see how it goes next time.  I even tried painting my toe nails and I just can't get them to look as nice as she gets them.  I only get pedicures in the summer and I would hate to give them up.

Wow, interesting! Pedicure is a big must on my list duirng the spring and summer days. Good question to ask the Dr, but, my first thinking is that handling money (supposedly) is the dirtiest item to touch if trying to stay clear of any bacterial risks. I'm not a Dr, by all means, but, I do know it helps me to keep purell hand sanitizer in every room of my house as well as in my vehicles. Friends and family have been very supportive to use this product when around me; as I do to for myself. Also, seek attention of your Dr if you notice joint issues while on Remicade! I had to go to the Mayo Clinic and long story short - I was having an adverse reaction to Remicade. Good luck!

I'm so glad i read your post because I started Cimzia a month ago and it never even crossed my mind to be worried about getting a pedicure.  I will tell you that I'm a licensed cosmetologist and EVERYONE should take precautions in getting pedicures.  I think the three best things to do to insure your health are

1. buy your own pedicure kit and have wherever you go only use yours.  some places even have kits available to buy for each customer.  if you are unsure of what to buy ask the salon to use brand new equipment and offer to pay $5-$10 for them to keep it for only you.  They will typically do it.

2. GO TO A SALON/SPA! Yes they tend to be more expensive and nobody wants to pay $40 for a pedicure but they are much more likely to be up to code on their sanitation.  And the estheticians are usually much more educated on disease and cleanliness.

3. Don't let the estheticians cut your nails.  Have them filed.  It is a lot safer you don't run the risk of bleeding and you don't have to worry.

I used to get manicures and pedicures all the time,  since my dx I have been in the same boat.  One thing I do plan on if I go back is buy my own kit.  They then store it in a container with your name on it and use it on no one else.  This will lessen at least one transmission point.
