malnutrition?

Fri, May 15, 2009 12:00 AM

Dealing with any kind of intestinal can leave a person with no desire to eat. We understand the importance of eating, and some of us manage to barely get enough daily nutrition to stay alive and then we begin to wonder what else is going wrong in our bodies when we begin to suffer from new symptoms that may or may not be part of the disease we are fighting. Could it be, that while striving to deal with our system, we are now suffering from malnutrition? I was and I didn’t even realize it!

What are the sign’s of malnutrition?

loss of appetite, pronounced weight loss without dieting, fatigue and low energy , hair and skin changes, a swollen abdomen , gross water retention . More aggressive of long term.. poor immune function (which can cause the body to have trouble fighting off infections)muscle weakness and pain,

bones that break easily , problems with organ function ,listlessness and apathy, dizziness.

The question is are you suffering from Malnutrition?

You know ... I can't really tell you the signs but I know I was in the hospital from the end of March until Easter Sunday partially because of malnutrition.  I keep being told that I am not the norm because I want to eat but everything was running through me.  By the time of my hospitalization I would hit the bathroom before even getting done with my meal most times.  I felt okay up until that day I went into the hospital.  I was losing weight and we were monitoring my electrolyte levels and we knew they were low.  I was fed TPN at the hospital, I ate regular meals, and had Ensure every meal in the hospital.  I guess you could have doctors do blood tests to check for malnutrition if you haven't had that done yet.
