I have Crohns now my 16 yr old is having Crohns symptoms

My son is showing symptoms of crohns.  My husband & I can barely accept my dx.  How would we ever accept our sons.   My husband really doesn't want to talk about "IT" and I am afraid to talk about "IT"...as if talking about "IT" might cause "IT".  I know that may sound strange to some...but there has been a lot of suffering for our family with this disease over the last few months and for our child  to be dx with "IT" would be unimaginable.

I know there can be a genetic factor to this disease.  Can anybody shed some light on whether or not crohns disease runs in your family???

Hi,  My son (#4) will turn 15 in a few weeks.  He was dx w/Crohn's last summer.  I have Crohn's and was dx 12 yrs ago.  I went through my 20s, 30s, miserable until  I was so anemic they ran thorough tests and found the source.  My family does not have any others dx with the disease.  However, my Dad always said he had duodenal or peptic ulcers.  Even after I was dx, Drs did not see his problem as Crohn's.  That creates a 3 generation link to ulceration in the digestive system.  I have 4 sons.  Son #4 has Crohn's. Son #1 has ulcerative colitis/Crohn's (he has a different Dad and that Dad has ulcerative colitis).  Son #2 has a tendency to have overall weakness, lack of appetite, cold hands/feet (possibly Reyaud's syndrome).  Son #3 is very healthy, I think he has escaped the genetic link to IBD.

Son #4 told me he does not blame me, it was not my fault. But I feel like it is.  He is starting high school in the fall.  He just wants to grow.  He is back to 90 lbs and 5'2".  (When he was diagnosed (problems started with fissure and fistula) he lost 12 lbs and had stomach aches. It is very difficult to watch him learn to adjust to this lifelong disease.  We are trying to reduce our gluten intake (that is supposed help --being gluten free-- but it is not easy.

There is a genetic factor. My brother and I both have Crohn's. However, the research I have read says that there is only around a 5% chance of passing on Crohn's.

I am 19, and I was diagnosed one year ago when i was 18.  Yes, it can run in the family.  My dad also has CD.  He was diagnosed in his early 20s.  As soon as i began developing symptoms in high school, my doctor asked about my family's medical history.  I told him my dad had Crohn's, and he said that could be the problem.  Sure enough it was.  In the case of your 16 year old, I think you need to give this a lot of attention while its early.  Hope everything works out.

Hello Elle. I am 23 years old and recently diagnosed with Crohns .. last week. And no one in my family has any type of stomach issues like this. Im not married but I have been with my boyfriend for 8 years now and he is so supportive. Your husband need to be more supportive cause at this point thats all that helps and if your child is diagnosed (which hopefully he is not) with this he is probally going to want to talk about it. I know I do it's on my mind 24 hours a day. Its not easy to hold all of this in. Good Luck. Hope your son is ok.
