dairy anyone?

When I was first diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and chrons my GI said I should be able to eat and drink everything when I'm feeling good, in other words not having a flare.  However, I know that some foods have bothered me in the past before and during a flare:  pizza, salad, peaches, tomatoes (never again)!I love my skim milk especially at night.  I haven't had it for maybe 3 nights and I may be noticing a difference or is it just a fluke?  I actually bought Rice milk, it's okay but not the same, obviously.  Does anyone else out there stop dairy totally?  How do I get my calcium?  Thanks so much!

Dairy is the worst for me and eggs . I have not tried soy milk or rice milk but I guess I will try it and see what happens.

I stopped dairy totally during flare-ups. I take Caltrate-D for calcium. I have never been a big milk drinker anyway, but my downfall is chocolate. I do eat small portions of it when I am in remission but try to stay away from it during a flare. I have found that during flare-ups liquid diets work well for lessening pain and trips to bathroom. The bowels need to rest during a flare not be constantly bombarded with solid food trying to pass through ulcerated areas. I know it is hard but it has worked for me in the past. There is nothing worse than sitting down at the table for dinner with my preotein shake and the kids are eating everything. Priority: remission. I just keep telling myself that.

Believe it or not, I've read many places where rice milk is better for you then soy milk.  I can't tolerate either.  I stick to lactose free milk when I do have it, which is not often.

Do you have any side effects if you take calcium in capsule form?

Interesting, since I am in flare up mode right now, I can have cheese.  In the past, it would simply destroy my gut, but I have 1/2 turkey and cheese sandwhich on wheat once a day and no problems.

Funny how our systems function.  Simply amazing.

Hey there, it's so nice to meet you via this web site.  Thanks so much for sharing.  I do like the chocolate soy milk.  When I was pregnant I had to drink Lactaid because I could not tolerate milk.  Here we go again!

I also have ulcerative colitis and dairy is my main trigger. It is soo hard for me but I stay away from it now. I drink Silk soymilk, it's not great but I don't get sick from it. I noticed a huge change since I have stayed away from dairy. So this probally isn't a fluke for you.
