Help - I'm Hungry

Wed, July 22, 2009 8:24 PM

I have been in a flare for a week now.  First one in a year.  I usually live on mashed potatoes and noodles, but am getting tired of them plus I know I need some veggies.  I just drank a small glass of V-8 juice is that OK?  Suggestions are Welcome!

chocolate ensure.  it's lactose-free, has vitamins and stuff, is a great way to get protien and calories when you don't feel like eating.

I am not an expert, but what about adding protien drinks like Ensure or Boost for the extra calories and essential vitamins/minerals.

This is what my daughter drinks and at least if she doesn't eat she's still getting calories and nutrients.

The first thing I was told when I had Crohn's, no tomatoes.  Nothing with tomatoes in it - liquid, paste, powder, etc.  I still live by that rule.

My GI doctor actually told me to eat mashed potatoes (not every day, but in moderation) along with soup (chicken noodle), broths, minimum pasta, foods that I  know I will not hurt from.  Everyone has their flare up foods, so it is a matter of trial and error.

Raw veggies are out for me.  I eat maybe 3 baby carrots a week.  I can eat cooked carrots (it's on my other diet) but other then that, occassionally green beans.  Less acid fruits, and only one fruit per day, no mixing.  Today was plum day.  Tasted awesome.   No sour apples, only sweet.  No white grapes, only purple.  The list goes on......oh, and coconut.  Suppose to have alot of healing properties.

What people don't realize is that when we are in flare up mode, we need to let our digestive tract heal.  It needs some down time.  Unfortunately, we also need the food to sustain us.   It is finding those foods to get us through until enough time has passed and our tract is working semi-normal again.

It really sucks having these diseases, and I would rather live on soup for a month then be in the hospital getting fed intravenously.  It took me over 2 years to accept that fact, but I'm getting there.
