2 easy tips to improve digestion

Wed, July 29, 2009 8:03 PM

For over the last 1.5 years I have made major dietary and liefstyle changes and I am really seeing the pay off these days.  I am down to only 6 colazol per day and I forget to take it some days or I might miss a dose and all is still good.  My plan is to be med free and I have no doubt I will get there.

If I listed everything I have done I'm sure most would be overwhelmed.  So here are 2 easy changes that will help a little.

1.  NEVER eat fruit with meals.  NO fruit 30 minutes before meal or 2 hours after.  Fruit digests very easily so when eaten with a full meal it will sit on the other food and ferment creating a ton of gas, bloating and discomfort.  So have fruit for snacks in between meals.

2.  Dont drink anything with your meals.  NO drinks 15 minutes before meals or 1 hour after.  Water-liquids will dilute stomach acid and will make it harder to digest your food.  You will also reduce the amount of air you will swallow.  If you drink a glass of water after your meal  you will burp alot.

Try it out, let us know how it goes for you.

I hope everyone feels a little better.  Good health to all!

Hi! I'm trying to learn all I can about nutrition to get me back into remission. (Rhyming unintentional )

Right now I'm on prednisone and 6MP. The info sheets from the pharmacy for both these meds say to take with a full glass of water, and to take with food. So I'm taking both with breakfast with a cup of water - is there any good way around the cup of water?

Do vitamin tablets need to be taken with a lot of water? The multivitamin and b-complex I'm taking say to take with a meal.

Thanks!

I have had crohns for 14 years now( diagnosed at 12 years old), and do not take medication,, I have kept it under decent control over the years due to my diet/ and lifestyle.

I drink a smoothie in the morning(consisting of 6 fruits,, this makes it easier to digest, ) and a Veggie juice at lunch (5 veggies) as it is essential we get vitamins and nutrients to keep our immune system and body strong and healthy. I limit my intake on bread/ dairy/sugar( not much at all) there for my diet is high protien/ veggie/ fruit (chicken, fish, some beef)

I also take supplements to give me that nutrition

omega 3-6-9 (fish oils), acidilophilis, vitamin a, b,c,a, a digestive enzyme and I drink a cup of aloe vera juice everyday(this heals inflamation from the inside)

It may sound like alot, however

my theory after years of coping with it, being in the hospital, and taking medication with unpleasent side effects is

you are what you eat,,,( so limit any refined sugar, white flour, dairy)

and to try and stay be cool, calm and enjoy your self. stress is a big trigger for many diseases espessially UC.

I  look and feel good, have energy, and I think it all comes down to my  eating habits, and lifestyle choices.

Hope this helps.

janellk,

These programs/books have been very helpful in getting my health back.  Some times the "healthy food" for normal people is Death food for us IBDers.  These programs are all designed to remove pathogenic bacteria and replace with probiotics.  They just work it in different ways.

Start here...

SCD, Breaking the Visious Cycle.   Buy the book.  IBD diet 101.

People with IBD can have issues with Candida, so you might have to follow this for a while until you feel good.  I followed this hard core for 3 months.  My current diet foundation is close to this.

Very good book with a TON of info.

Good luck

Do you eat fruit at all?  I am a health nut and I love my fruits and veggies but I think they are making me sick instead of making me healthy.  I am trying to find a diet that will help my disease but I am finding it difficult.  If I know I have something important to do I will not eat at all that day and that is getting old.  Any ideas?

I follow this as well and it really works.  I think we suffer from low digestive enzymes as well so eating this way helps rev up the digestion and not overload it.  Chewing your food well also helps.  I also take a digestive enzyme to help me digest but they are found in fruits, veggies and meats as well.  Thanks for the awesome information.  As usual.
