donating blood?

Sat, August 01, 2009 7:36 PM

if we are in remission is it okay to donate blood? or do the usually not let us considering were generally anemic? but if were in remission and not anemic at the moment, can we?  or do they say no bcuz we have UC or Crohns? this is probably a silly question, but thank you for your time and your replies.

Hey kg,

I've had UC for about 8 years now and am currently taking Asacol and Azathiaprine. I was able to donate blood for a few years without any trouble. However there was trouble last time I gave blood. I gave without any problems but then a week later I had to leave a class to use the restroom really fast and I actually ended up passing out in the hallway and soiling myself. I had to go to the ER and it turns out I had low potassium. I had to get a few more tests run then the hospital physician told me not to give blood anymore. So, basically it is possible to give blood but just be really really careful when you do it. Stay hydrated and listen to what your body tells you so that you don't find yourself an embarrassing situation. Hope this helps.

When my daughter was in high school, the blood mobile came around and all her friends were donating blood.  My daughter was so excited and really wanted to help and donate blood.  Unfortunately, she couldn't because she was on Azathioprine.  I remember her coming home and lying in bed crying about this and it made her having UC more upsetting.  When you go to give blood, just tell them what medication you are on and your condition.  I hope you are able to give blood.  Let us know.
