Veganism?

Tue, March 04, 2008 6:30 PM

Hi, I've had Crohn's for almost 12 years, and recently adopted a vegan diet.  I was wondering if anyone else has done this, and how it affected your symptoms?  I've cut out meat and dairy completely since the end of December, and I can't remember the last time I've felt so good.

I've had Crohn's for 16 years; and I've been vegetarian for the past 7 years and off dairy for the last year.

I also stopped drinking milk regularly 7 years ago as well- I switched to rice and soy milks.

my symptoms really improved then; and have improved even more after I went off of dairy.

I'm unfortunately flaring right now- due to stress and the weather changing (new england weather is not known for its pleasantness) but I'm still standing by my diet- I eat eggs, kosher fish, and all things vegan.

there are some wonderful vegan cookbooks out there- veganomicon by isa chandra moskowitz and terry hope romero is a great place to start.

I am also interested in this.  My sister and her family just became vegan after reading "The China Study", a fascinating book.  I was leaning that way until my son was diagnosed with Crohn's this Jan. and now it is all about protein in the form of meat and eggs!!  It is making me crazy!  There is a book that is out of print about "curing" Crohn's and Colitis and it is written by a guy based in Sebastapol, Ca. and he touts a raw and vegan diet.  Some people can't tolerate raw foods--my son seems ok with it as "D" has not happened for him....yet.

I am thrilled to hear that you are feeling well on a vegan diet.  The only major issue I have concern with is getting B-12--supposedly you can only get it from animal sources, even if it is a supplement.

From what I have read people with Crohn's need to eat more protein than others because of the way they don't digest properly...but if you are not having a flare, are you then digesting properly??

I hope other people write in. Oh, look up that book on Amazon, about curing Crohn's naturally--it is interesting to read the reviews, even though the book is no longer available.  You will at least be able to find the guy's website and read those testimonials too.  It is interesting.
