Hi everyone, I hope everyone is well as possible. I know it can be hard but hang in there.
I find it hard to come to this forum because I see of all the drug treatment prescribed by doctors just masking the problem and not getting to the root of the problem. I get discouraged. I was once treated this way and never felt better until I made major dietary changes, lifestyle changes and read as much info about my UC as I could find.
I had been doing very well with just diet and lifestyle changes but I would only reduce my meds and could not get to med free. Through heavy metal blood and hair analysis testing I found I had elevated levels of Mercury and Aluminum in my body. I then started removing all sources of Mercury and Aluminum in my life. I had my Silver (mercury) filling removed, removed all Teflon cookware, change to a aluminum free deodorant and baking soda…etc…etc.
After all my mercury filling were replaced with composites I tried to chelate. I tried a Cilantro based heavy metal detox. I did not know at the time that Cilantro will chelate mercury out of soft tissue and through the intestines. BIG MISTAKE! 1 month later I started to flare. Bleeding, cramping and diarrhea. I stopped the detox and followed the diet and supplement protocols from the book “listen to your gut” by Jini Patel Thompson. I was able to stop the flare in less than a week.

I'd be nervous about the EDTA. While it is used in some products like canned beans it's not the best thing to do, at least for me.

Part 2
About 1 month later a supplement packet that I was taking changed their formula. I was avoiding a supplement that had Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) in it. ALA chelates mercury from soft tissue as well and though the intestines. They moved ALA from a supplement that I was avoiding to one that I was taking. About 3 weeks later I started to have a HUGE flare. I knew right away this was going to be bad. I started myself on the Elemental Diet as called out in “listen to your gut” The elemental diet was helping but then I read through all my supplements and found I was taking ALA. I stopped taking the ALA and the flare stopped about 3 day later (1.5 weeks total).
After all that I have been able to get back to real food and I am doing very well. 1-2 BMs a day, all formed and no Diarrhea.
Those 2 flares taught me that the Mercury in me has to come out. But I have to do it smarter. I found a doctor that specializes in mercury chelation using EDTA which binds to mercury in the blood and flushes it out in urine.

Next year should be interesting. If you have mercury fillings stay away from Cilantro and ALA.
