6 MP & Low sperm count

Fri, March 21, 2008 1:48 PM

Has anyone heard about a low sperm count with 6 MP?  I am worried that it might affect my son. Any advice?  What do most doctors recommend?

Basically what it comes down to is weighing risks against benefits and discussing the implications and possibilities with his doctor.

The data on the effects of this agent on sperm count is conflicting. Some data says it has no effect, while others show that there are some reductions. I discussed the greater subject of azathioprine use(the body converts this agent into 6 MP) for males such as myself who would like to have children, and he said that the current data suggests that it should be ok to take at all times but might be advisable to hold off on the drug while trying to conceive, as there are slight risks of genetic mutations that might effect a baby, but that the data is inconclusive, and that he would probably rather keep me on the drug until which time that I am planning on trying to have a child, then we will discuss it and look at the most up to date research on the subject before making a decision. I know it can be a little alarming to think about these possibilities but the drug has so many benefits for crohn's and UC patients and without data so say that it shouldn't be used because of a definate risk, I will continue to use the drug to keep myself healthy so that I CAN someday think about having children.
