Sugar Freak

Mon, January 04, 2010 11:26 PM

I know sugar is NOT good for me. Why do I crave it so much? I read somewhere there was a study done that found high craving for sugars in ppl w/Crohns & UC.  Does anybody have issues with sugar cravings?
I have a friend who is the same with sugar and she is beginning to have digestive problems.
Why do I DO what I shouldn't and NOT do what I should?

I am 25 years old and have always been a sugar freak. I have to admit, it's my drug of choice. As a teenager, I would go on huge candy binges regularly. Now my nutrition is considerably better and I don't binge like that anymore, but I still find it difficult to go even one day without sweets of some kind.

I read a book called "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" about a year ago. It has a theory that the reason we have IBD is because we consumed much higher amounts of sugar and processed foods growing up than people without. I get frustrated not knowing why I have this disease, and this is just one guess.

The book explains a diet of clean eating that eliminates all processed food from the diet for a period of a year or two. It claims that you can "cure" your body of Crohn's, Colitis, and many other diseases.  After the diet, you're supposedly able to go on eating whatever you want afterwards. I know some people who have sworn by the diet, but my doctors claim there is no evidence to suggest it works.

I am a sugar fiend!  I love chocolate!
I have found that most times sweets are the only things I can easily swallow, so I try to eat lots of fruit pies and pretend they are good for me...lol! As far as serious cravings go, I sometimes crave red meat.  Just have to have a ground sirloin patty or steak!  IDK... maybe low iron or protein?

I also have huuuuuuge sugar cravings.  If I do not eat every couple  of hours...I feel naseous, dizzy, angry, and sometimes cannot perform tasks correctly.  I have also thrown up, dry-heaved and passed out. If I don't eat as soon as I wake up in the morning, I throw up or dry-heave. I have been tested for diabetes and hypoglycemia, but I am fine. Plus, I always want chocolate and sweets! Do you experience anything like this?
