Thoughts about alcohol intake

Tue, January 26, 2010 11:43 AM

i hear different opinions about alcohol consumption with Crohns.  i am 41 and have had CD for 2 years.  there are times when i have a mixed drink tht it makes me feel better because it moves things along in my system and give me regular bowel movements.  has anyone heard that alcohol is horrible with CD?

ok so it put *** in place of something that wasn't meant to be anything inappropriate... but what I was trying to say is that it is (difficult) on your liver....

i agree... i think moderation is the key to this... but if you're on a drug that that advises not to drink alcohol (because its *** your liver already) you should probably not take the chance, in my opinion...

i was at a patient education event this weekend and one doctor who presented said yes, you can drink alcohol (in moderation) while on a drug like azatioprine... but everyone on here knows - when you're feeling the pain from ibd, you'll do anything to make it go away... while i was on azathioprine i didn't want to make it any harder on my body than what it is already going through... but it is very hard to balance a normal social life when you have to say "i can't drink..." while out at a bar or restaurant with friends.
-just a personal choice not to drink though.  i didn't see a drink or two worth any risk... but if someone decides it is worth the risk for them, obviously just don't drink a lot... try and take good care of your body!

Tonite I put a frozen pizza in the oven and had a beer with it while I was watching the hockey game. I drank 1 bottle not the whole 6 pack. The key to everything is MODERATION. Of course there are some medications thay say NO achohol. Then you learn to substitute something else.

I'm nearly 57 and have had crohns for nearly 3 years. I hate to be the "anti" role-model, but I have remicade infusions every 2 months...and I drink every week-end...the alchol doesn't really bother my tummy....takes a lot to give me diarhea....but let me eat cheese or dairy and my tummy gets constipated and bloated....everyone is different....I take miralax nearly every day so that I do have BM's....but even when I had IBS i was constpated....just do what feels right for you...we are all different!

Yes alcohol does bother my system majorly... but only it seems when I am flaring.. in moderation when not flaring alcohol is usually ok... w/ alcohol all the UC symptoms become worse and I usually pay for a night of drink the complete next day so when Im not feeling well I pick and choose when its worth it... GOOD LUCK!

I've heard lots of diffferent opinions from people with IBD on this one. Some people say it makes their IBD symptoms worse, and some say it has no effect/makes them better. I do know that alcohol is supposed to be avoided if you're taking certain antibiotics or immunomodulators. Personally, I avoid alcohol - it's not a "trigger" for my Crohn's but I'd rather not drink on top of all the meds I take (one of them, 6mp, can mess with the liver all on it's own!).
