SPORTS WITH CROHNS??

Sun, February 07, 2010 10:07 PM

My daughter has been an athlete since she was six. Shes 15 and just diagnosed with Crohns. I knew something was up with her way before the diarrhea started. Her basketball game was off. She was always fast and agressive and this season she was so sluggish. We were asking her if she still wanted to play cuz it didn't look that way to us. She just kept saying she wants to play but she tires easily.

She is in the middle if her first ever flare up. The blood has stopped, but the diarrhea continues, and she is very anemic. She went from 107lbs to 94lbs.

Anyway, softball season is almost upon us and she plays for school and on a travel team. Will there be softball in her future?? Will there be basketball next fall? She loves her sports. I keep telling her she'll be fine, but honestly I don't know.

I was on the high school field hockey team when I was diagnosed with UC.  My game was definitely off at first-sometimes it was because I was exhausted from the fever caused by a flare, or I was in pain, or sometimes I just really had to go to the bathroom.  I found that it was a day-to-day thing.  I wouldn't know if my body would let me play until I was on the field.  I talked to my coach and she was very understanding if I needed to come out.  Talk to the coach so they know to keep an eye on you but keep playing!  When I was in remission the disease hardly affected me at all.  I actually think that staying involved in physical activity helped keep my symptoms under control.  It is definitely possible to juggle both IBD and sports.

My son was dx with crohn's at age 14. He was also an athlete competing in wrestling, football and olympic weightlifting at the time. The first 9mos were a little rough until he got in remission. In HS he was a state and national wrestling champion as well as JR national olympic weight lifting champ. He got a scholarship to a Big ten school and was a national qualifier. We always encouraged him to not let CD stop him from doing the things he loved. There were times he had to sit out and many times he didnt compete at 100% but he always competed. He did extremely well with the cards he was dealt and I hope your daughter can find that balance.

I have had crohns for 7 years, prior to being diagnosed I competed in National BMX races for the team of Michigan unfortunately after being diagnosed I stopped racing.  I tried to keep racing for several months but the frequent bath room trips and missing my gate times was to much of a hassle.  Hopefully this will help you, and I will keep you and your daughter in my Prayers.  God Bless You.
