Need to lose some weight, but can't eat much that is "healthy"

Tue, March 02, 2010 4:33 PM

Still somewhat in a flare. Over time, my weight has crept up, and to start with, I'd like to lose 10 pounds. Any suggestions ? I eat sensibly ... watch portions, include veggies when I can, and don't overindulge in junk food. My husband recently started the Atkins diet ... he's had great success, yet I'm not sure my intestines can handle that type of eating. I've also found that high fiber, raw veggies, and now salads sort of bother me. Typical breakfast for me is a slice of toast with small amt. of peanut butter, or a few slices of bacon (eggs bother me). Lunch would be lean deli turkey and a slice of cheese on white bread (wheat bread doesn't agree with me). Dinner is either chicken, pork or ground meat. Any suggestions ? Maybe the things I think don't agree really do, but its just part of the disease ? In theory, I'd like a quick way to drop some pounds, and then move to a sensible diet plan.

Also, has anyone found they have gained weight on Lialda ?

Try eating small amounts frequently during the day, every two or three hours. Eat foods that don't make your blood sugar go up or down, as in avoid sugar, caffeine, alcohol, spices, refined foods, etc., etc.  Avoid big meals. Only eat foods that give you good nutrition, as in avoid junk foods, foods with chemicals, processed foods, etc., etc. Buy organic if you can afford it. Cook from scratch. Keep it simple, as in avoid sauces, creams and elaborate concoctions. Eat good fats, as in stay away from margerine, refined oils, etc., etc., and go easy on the fats. Buy grass fed beef, bone in hams without nitrates or preservatives, etc., etc. Buy locally produced food when possible. Once you do all of this you will get your taste buds back, your blood sugar will keep from going up and down so much and you will have better control of your weight. Read "The Low Blood Sugar Handbook" by Edward and Patricia Krimmel, ISBN# 0-916503-04-6. Most likely in your local library.

Weight is my issue, too. I do fine with well-cooked veggies as long as they're not really fibrous or gassy (though I fine Beano helps a lot...) I've also taken to having some canned fruit.
I find it so tough. I have a good friend on Weight watchers and I can't eat the way she's being taught to eat!! So Frustrating!!
My main problem is portion control, and especially when I eat with my family - all guys who can eat a lot without gaining.
So.... I don't have great answers, but... you're not alone!
