Alcohol and Crohn's

Tue, March 16, 2010 12:00 AM

Do any of you have a hard time drinking alcohol? I used to be able to drink the night away and be fine (weekend partying, not everyday, lol). Now I often end up puking for 1 or 2 days after drinking. I take Pentasa and Imuran daily, and every 8 weeks I have a Remicade IV. I was wondering if it had to do with the Crohn's or the medications. ... or maybe I am just starting to get old ( I am 28).......

I can't!  I used to be the Tequila Queen and now I can't even think about taking a shot of tequila without getting nausea and reliving the pain from previous drinking nights.  It is hard sometimes because the majority of my old friends all would go out and basically meet downtown..... Haaa It's not very fun hanging out at the bar SOBER.

I have come to terms with not drinking and you will too when you experience the hangover.  Maybe it's just this time in your life (a season) that you wont be drinking and maybe you could get well enough to have a few every so often, but listen to your body.  If you feel ill after a drink, your body doesn't want more.

Good luck.

PS:  A small glass of wine could be something you could get away with.  It's made with grapes not a grain/wheat.

Crohn's flares up when you stress your system out and on hand the drugs they give you for crohn's mask the symptom's.  So you all know alcohol puts stress on the system if it does not show up because of the drugs they have you on believe me some day it will and at that point it will be surgery time. Grains and yeast are a big no no and all alcohol has one if not both in them. Good luck with this because most people will not change they think they deserve to do what they wish.

I used to drink socially, for years, no problem. Now, alcohol is like poison to me! My cheeks flush, sometimes it hurts my mouth, and it seems to take over 24 hours to start feeling normal again. I've realized I just feel so much better w/o it, I don't even miss it anymore. It's funny, it seems to bother other people more than it bothers me, like they're worried about having a glass of wine in front of me! Seriously, crohn's gives me so many problems, this is the least of my worries :-)

It took me sometime before I learned alcohol was a no no for me.   I always thought weekends were made for partying.  Seriously who goes to the lake sandbar or lays by the pool w/o a tropical hurricane in hand lol! Not me... anymore!  Hangovers were a killer.  It has not been easy not joining the party scene....but it keeps me out of the hospital.   Listen to your body...it'll tell you what is best.

I also get a horrid hangover if i drink too much.  I figure my body is trying to tell me something.  Now I am almost afraid to drink because of the deadly hangovers and the memory of the agony.  Alcohol is an irritant to the GI tract and is also pro-inflammatory.  I get bad gastritis w/ nausea and vomiting, plus diarrhea, gas, bloating, deyhydration etc.  I'm sure the severity of the hangover is because of my Crohn's, but I also have chronic fatigue syndrome.  I am gradually drinking less and less over time...  but now i am 32 but have already probably drank a lifetime's worth of alcohol.  In a way I am grateful that my illness is turning me off from alcohol, in a way it is disciplining me.  Thanks for the post, was a good reminder for me.  I don't mean to sound preachy at all I don't judge, hope you figure out what works for you!

I drink whatever I want, whenever I want. Usually have a beer with pizza or a sandwich and 1 glass of wine if I'm out at a restaurant.Hard liquor only if I'm not the driver. I'm 74 so gone are the days with a drink and cigarette in one hand and  bar snacks in the other.  Marilyn

Hi there, I've had CD/UC for about 3 yrs...I'm on ( 10) Remicade every 8 weeks and i drink only on the week-ends...I don't have any side effects from the alchol..I drink gentlemans jack/diet coke. I don't party though...stay over at friends house hanging out....I have had a few problems with wine...but nothing serious...your body will tell you what you can and can't do....but sometimes its worth living on the edge....I grew up in the 60's and sometimes you have to do what makes you, you!

I am on Remicade and 6MP for Crohn's. The work that your liver has to do to metabolize these drugs is enough, on top of the way your body has to cope with the disease. Don't make it worse by adding alcohol into the mix.

I can get a severe hangover from drinking only one glass of wine or one beer. It's just simply not worth it for me to drink. I've been really sick from IBD which is not my choice; I no longer make myself sick from something that is my choice. I don't mean to sound preachy because I used to enjoy social drinking and it can be hard to explain to others why you're always not drinking but I just don't care anymore. I value my health too much.

Alcohol takes a terrible toll on the human body, CD takes a terrible toll on the human body, a double whammy if you will.  Be kind to your body, as in one toll at a time and only the one that you cannot control.
