UC and Acid Reflux

Wed, March 31, 2010 9:58 AM

Having been diagnosed with UC approx 3 years ago and finally (within the last year) been steroid free, on Remicade now along with 2 other meds and feeling really good.  However, just started getting symptoms of acid reflux where after I eat (doesn't matter what I eat either) I burp and have heartburn really bad.  The burping is almost like hiccups, but there aren't.  I've been trying Tums and it seems to help, but wonder if I really should be using them since I'm on so many other meds and Remicade every 8 weeks.  The last couple of weeks have really been awful for me with a small flare and stress over school, etc. (I know that doesn't help).

Just wondered if anyone else suffers from acid reflux and what has helped?

thanks

I have UC and GERD.  My dr. told me it is common to have GERD with UC.  I am on the highest dose of generic prevacid.  My dr. started me on 20mg and raised me to 40mg.  It helps a lot, sometimes I have to take a second pill because it get's really bad.  I have to take it every day.
I started to fell better so I stopped taking them and it came right back and it didn't matter what I was eating.  I suggest you see your GI dr. and have him give you a script for whatever your insurance will cover.  hope this helps.  Sorry, to hear you are in discomfort.

I suffered from acid reflux for twenty years. I finally discovered that I was hypoglycemic (a low blood sugar sufferer). I started following the hypoglycemic regiment and have been acid reflux free ever since. I have yet to take one antacid tablet or suffer from one episode of GERD. When your blood sugar drops you go into fight or flight mode and all of your glands start working overtime along with the production of  excess stomach acid. It is the excess stomach acid that is causing your GERD. Read "The Low Blood Sugar Handbook" by Edward and Patricia Krimmel, ISBN 0-916503-04-6. Eat small meals often throughout the day and stop consuming that which causes your blood sugar to vary too much. The book explains how your body functions as well as how to maintain your proper blood sugar levels. I spent years going to doctors to no avail, they couldnt figure it out. Even if this isn't your problem, the book is a very good read for anybody. You'll learn how everything that you consume affects your body.

I have had symptoms of acid reflux since I was a teenager (I was diagnosed with Crohn's at 25) and have used daily Pepcid to treat my symptoms with success. I recently stopped it to see how i'd do without it. If I stay away from trigger foods (chocolate, tomato sauce, alcohol), then I do well. I can't lay down after eating, either.

Talk to your GI and mention your symptoms. What you are describing sounds like reflux which should be investigated further with an upper GI endoscopy. Crohn's/UC meds won't treat reflux.
