immunosuppressed - fungal infections

Tue, April 06, 2010 9:26 PM

Does anyone else have a problem with getting skin fungal infections from being immunosuppressed?  I currently have infections on both feet.  I have tried OTC ointments, but it's not getting any better.  I see my PCP in a couple of weeks so I am going to ask about it, but I'm just wondering if it is harder to get rid of because I am on Remicade.  I've had athlete's foot pop up prior to Remicade, but I was always able to treat it quickly.  I now also get bumps under my breasts if I don't change clothes quickly after exercising.  It's so annoying.  Just wanted to know if others have this problem.  Thanks!

Yup!  The bumps may be molluscum contagiosum.  A dermatologist can easily identify.  I see my dermatologist every two weeks right now and he is trying to cure my three warts but feels quite defeated.  He just says until they come up with new treatments for crohns it is going to be a struggle.  I am fighting viral skin infections right now.  I don't like it but I can't stop the imuran or remicade so I will keep up with the dermatologist.  Luckily for me nobody notices my skin issues as they are very small bumps.

I'm not on any antibiotics now.  But when I was first diagnosed, I was on Cipro and Flagyl.  The Cipro caused me to get thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mouth.  I had to stop the Cipro and stopped the Flagyl a couple months later.  It was pretty icky.

My daughter has been on Remicade for the past 18 months and was also started on Flagyl-an antibiotic (spelling?), but after three months of being on the Flagyl, she started to get a black tongue.  Took her to the dentist, pediatrician, gastroenterologist and no one had a clue as to what this was from.  She had been on Flagyl last year, and she didn't get the black tongue.  We were sent to Cleveland Clinic to get a second opinion for the CD as she has had many flares, and they told us while there that she had a fungal infection on her tongue and to stop the Flagyl.  The black tongue is now gone!  Am wondering if you are on any antibiotics?  Just a thought.  Hope you get rid of your infections.
