How tired can I possibly get...

Fri, April 30, 2010 12:00 AM

I was on prednisone for 6 months and finally tapered off completely last Sunday.  I have never felt so exhausted in my life.  Anybody else experience severe fatigue coming off Pred?

Yup, I go through the same thing.  I have to taper off the Prednisone VERY slow in order for me to get off of it and for my adrenal gland to realize that it has to begin working again.  When I got off prednisone the last time, I guess it was too fast and I ended up getting a flare up again & was EXTREMELY fatigued all the time.

You may also want to have your dr. check your iron levels.  If you are flared and have been bleeding, you may be loosing iron as well.  I didn't even know i was anemic until I had suffered with severe exhaustion and fatigue for a few months.

Find a Doctor that will test you for adrenal fatigue but not the blood test because they only test that one time and it's in the a.m. hours your adenals will be low in the a.m. but it will be good enough to pass, but the rest of the day your adenals go through the bottom.  You need to be tested  four times a day but go with the saliva test. A lab out of WA state did mine. My Doctor has got me off all med's and I'm just on all nat. supp. I have not felt this great in years. I was in class three of adrenal fatigue. I've had crohn's for going on 17 years. Hope this helps if you need more info just e-mail.

I used to be on prednisone for a long time, and had a very hard time tapering off. Every time  I thought I'd made it off the stuff, I'd get a flare-up and have to take more. It was pretty rough.

My GI doctor finally helped me taper off by putting me on Immuran (azathioprine). It helped control my symptoms for years, and I was surprised how easy it was. After that, I only took prednisone occasionallly for stubborn flare-ups. Maybe discuss this with your doctor. Some people do better on Immuran than others, but it might help to have another medication to help you along.

I've also taken Entocort in the past, which is basically a steroid that's coated to release in the intestine. My doctor said you get fewer side effects, since it doesn't go all through your system. She said besides going to work where it's needed, it also gets cleaned out by the liver more quickly. That might be another one to consider.
