Vitamins and Supplements for IBD

Wed, May 05, 2010 12:00 AM

Hello Everyone!

I am trying to find myself the right vitamin. I am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of medication I take and I don't like the idea of doubling that number by taking so many other vitamins. I currently take a multi-vitamin fortified with vitamin D. Not sure if its any good.

What do you take? What is the most important vitamin for you? Does anyone have an recommendations/brands? If you could make the perfect vitamin, what would it be?

Solgar, Now Brand (white bottle with bright orange label) are the ones that I know of and that are good supplement brands.  Stick with reputable chains/brands when you buy vitamins, like GNC or Vitamin Shoppe.

I take CALCIUM (like major calcium & vitamin D.. I have Osteoporosis from all the prednisone i've had to take), Omega 3fatty acids, Acidophillis (good bacteria),  B vitamins 12 & 6 for energy, Biotin, Vitamin C (supports immune system), Iron (check to make sure you need it though because you should not take an iron supplement if it's not needed.  I'm anemic so it's necessary for me)

Yikes!! I completely forgot about the China issue (I just recently started experimenting with various supplements). I do take Citracal, though, I'm pretty sure it's manufactured in the US.

I'll have to check where these others are manufactured, but I also take 2000IU of vitamin D once a day, Natren Healthy Trinity Probiotic once a day, and grape seed extract (thought to be an anti-inflamatory) twice a day. I've been doing this for a month, while avoiding my trigger foods (I have Crohn's) and have had relatively normal *ahem* bowel movements for the first time in a decade without being on steroids!!! I have been battling a flare for the past few weeks, but I also cheated a little and ate dairy for a couple of days.

You can also try turmeric, which is also known to be a natural anti-inflamatory. They make it as a supplement but you can also get it by eating mustard, or just pick some up in the spice section of your grocery store. It's also very prominent in Indian food and curries (yum)!!!!

I'm also looking to try digestive enzymes. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Check into FORVIA.
I think you'll find what you're looking for in a vitamin.

My doctor recommended that I take a multi-vitamin with plenty of zinc and iron.  I also have to take a separate daily dose of Vitamin D and B-12.  Another one I would recommend is a calcium supplement.  I also take Omega-3 supplements because they are supposed to reduce inflammation.  I hope that helps!

I was taking quite a lot of vitamins and supplements when the contamination (baby formula) scare came from China. During all of the reporting there was an article stating that the majority (around 80%) of the vitamins and supplements in the world come from China. I contacted all of the companies of the vitamins and supplements that I was taking at the time and asked them if their products were made in China or with Chinese supplied ingredients. Not one manufacturer answered me. I needed the vitamins and supplements up to that point because I had been very sick. I was able to stop taking them because I had recovered pretty good and could now get adequate nuitrition from my diet. There might be some good sources that you could trust, but I would suggest that you do your research (homework) first. The FDA doesn't do a very good job with what they do regulate. Without regulation it is a crap shoot.

There has to be some company we can trust to actually make vitamins that are genuine. At least I hope so!

Does anyone have a good experience with vitamins?

I quit taking them when I found out that there is no regulation of the production of vitamins and that most vitamins and supplements are made in China.
