Seeking Input on Crohn's Disease

Mon, May 10, 2010 12:00 AM

Hello,

My name is Des Keller. I'm a Charlotte, NC-based freelance writer working on a series of short articles regarding Crohn's Disease  for an online medical information site. In particular, I'm writing about how people with the disease deal with everyday issues. In particular I want to get information on strategies how people cope with:
1. Going on first date--any date for that matter--but a first date for starters.
2. Making it through a long business meeting
3. Taking a road trip
4. Dinner with the in-laws or similar situations
5. Making it through an entire concert by your favorite band.

Please be assured that if you want to contact me to offer information/advice as to how you deal with these situations, the article will not use your actual name or otherwise identify anyone. In fact, the site I work for insists I use aliases, rather than actual names.

Thanks for any help anyone may wish to provide.

Sincerely,
Des Keller

Hi my name is Tracey I was dx with Crohn's 2 yrs ago March. I met my current boyfriend in July of the same year I was on Remicade so I was doing pretty good . I was upfront from the begining I am not sure if it was the1st date or the 2nd when I told him I had Crohn's. When we met I had an immediate connection with him and felt I could tell him anything,he asked  questions which I am glad because people just do not get the disease at all.We didnt go to dinners because I really didnt eat and also didnt want to have to run to the bathroom either. We have been together now almost 2 yrs and have lived together for a yr and a half. He has been wonderful and understanding. I feel you need to be upfront right away you don not want to invest a lot of time and become attached to some one that when you do tell them they leave cause they can not deal.Thats just my feeling about it, do it right away.

hi my name is Nancy and i had crohn's for a few yrs. there are times i have actdents while i'm sleeping and a few times while i worked. i'm no longer working. there have been times i could be with my family  cause i was having so much pain. i still have a lot of pain almost daily but i take imodium ad now so that i'm able to do more or dont have to worry bout that bathroom as often. I'm currenlty homeless and live in the woods. at times i still have an accdent while sleeping of just being there. i'm under too much stress and i know it but my main concern right now is getting back to Asheville NC. my boyfriend puts a lot of stress on me daily. but i cope the best i can right now. I have applied for ssi so i'm not able to work. when i go places i look for the bathroom first thing. i found that resting helps a lot with the pain.as well as the fatguie. if you know of someone that could help me cause i'm eating from a dumpster i greatly appercate it. thanks your friend Nancy.

I realize this is a difficult subject and I am a total unknown here (and I don't have Crohn's, though a good friend does) but I was hoping for some input on the questions above. In particular, how/when do you tell someone you are dating or going to date about the disease. Can you get through that first date without them knowing or is the nature of the illness with most of you that someone needs to know right off the top. Thanks again.
