rehydration and chron's

Fri, May 21, 2010 12:00 AM

I would like to know which rehydration drinks people find compatible for someone like me, who has severe chron's disease AND gastritis. I get scared because they all seem to be making sick, and summer is coming.

I agree that Pedialyte is good. My husband mixes the unflavored kind with orange juice. You could also mix it with something else, maybe, if orange juice is too acidic for you. Many stores sell their own house brand of Pedialyte, so you could get it a bit cheaper. You can usually find it in the section where they sell the baby formula. They have flavored versions, haven't tried them. The frozen pops sound good, also, for summer.

I add one or two Enlive! I buy it online, I don't think it's in the stores.  I can't drink any of the nutrition drinks sold in the stores. Enlive has all electrolytes and protein of a full meal and 300 calories a box. They have two flavors Apple and Peach, both of which are awful, but I feel I'm getting some nutrition and fluid. Water does the trick and once in a while I dilute a powdered Gatorade (now hard to find). The powder doesn't use fructose which bothers my stomach.

My Dad has also severe dehydration and malnutrition due to his UC.  I have found that the Trace Minerals Research Brand of Power Pack Electrolyte Stamina packets added to water has been very helpful. I found these at Whole Foods. It contains over 72 electrolytes. He has been able to tolerate this without stomach upset or gassiness. Hope this helps you.  Chris
