Piercings

Sun, October 03, 2010 3:53 PM

I just got my belly button pierced. I have crohns and colitis. I am away at college and did it. I haven't told my parents yet. My mom didn't want me to do it because she was worried it would affect my crohns. I have my ear pierced multiple times and never had a problem so I didn't think this would be any different. Has anyone here had problems or have they been fine?

Funny. I had pierced ears--I did it in high school without parents permission and they definitely freaked out, but the got used to it eventually. But a few years ago I had to take out my rings for a series of procedures that prohibited them (MRI, surgery, etc). I had them out for a couple months and the holes closed up meanwhile. I have been tempted to get them re-pierced but so far I've opted not to... mostly because of the warnings on my meds that say I'm more susceptible to infection while taking immunosuppressants. I suspect it wouldn't be that big a deal, but I figure why deliberately invite a potential infection if I don't have to. Mostly I'm just being paranoid though I think, so if you are taking care to prevent infection I doubt you'll have a problem. Good luck.

one thing to worry about is the fact you are putting another foreign thing in your body with the piercing. i had foot surgery years back and they said no one in history had problems with the *** they had to put in my ankle. well, two years later i was having surgery to take the *** out. my ankle was purple at that point where the *** was and my body was going into shock from it. i know yours is not the same and a lot smaller, but my body is not very sensitive to all metals. i can't even wear jeans with the metal button anymore because that small metal button on the inside burns a hole into my skin that will be bright red, even with a shirt between my skin and the jeans. something to consider. they tell us not to get tattoos for the same reason with putting the ink into your skin. good luck.

It will be fine!  If you don't keep it clean, it will get infected, but it wouldn't have an effect on your Crohn's at all.

I'm sure it will look cute!

I'm with Lizzie's Mom.  Keep it clean and don't worry.  Your parents love you - trust me on that - that's why they worry.  :-)

I did the same thing when I was your age....sshhhh, my daughter's don't know!   My parents were so strict and wouldn't allow it, so what better reason did a daughter need?    It will be fine...keep it clean and wear clothes that don't aggrevate it.
