cookies

I know 90% of what you read on the internet is silly silliness, but after a flare I always go back and read it anyway, and I've found some of the information on ways to adjust diet is tempting to try (and makes sense, if not for the reasons the authors give).

Specifically, I am considering giving up refined sugar. Possibly wheat too, but lets not get crazy...

Here is my challenge: I love cookies. They are an integral part of my support system, both making them and eating them (seriously--mixing up the mid-terms/finals batch of cookies is almost a ritual). Any other changes in my eating habits are pretty easy for me to contemplate, but I want to keep cookies! At the same time, if sugar IS a problem for me, then the cookies are definitely setting me back. Obviously the answer is not to give up cookies, but to make new, better cookies!

So who has suggestions? Im considering agave, honey, maple syrup, stevia. I would prefer not to use artificial substitutes--its not calories that Im worried about, after all, and splenda has its own little drawbacks. I dont know about the flour substitutes--Ive used ground oats and barley flour, but that was back when the prednisone was helping more than it is now. Ideally I can find a recipe to stand-in for the standard chocolate-chippers, since thats the true definition of cookie in my mind.

Oh yeah, and chocolate. I will use pure dark, but does anyone know if they make sugar-free chocolate that is bake-worthy?

(So this is the background: I thought I was doing okay on 40 mg pred until the other night when I had to go to the hospital, and it turns out I have a jejunal stricture. No way of knowing how recently that developed, but its making me take a step back to reevaluate. Im in the midst of building up to azathioprine. Id like to give it a shot, and I want to help it along as much as I can. And Id really prefer not to get hospitalized for an obstruction in the meantime.)

Thanks!

For me I can't touch sugar, no white sugar, brown sugar, no honey, no maple syrup, and chocolate is like acid to my system.

I have the same problem.  I found that Pamela's Cookies are good. They are sweetened by agave and also are gluten free.  They are found in most health food stores. Or online.

I've given up sugar, carbs, gluten and yes... total difference!!!!  I order items from www.sugarlessdelite.com and also from amazon.com as far as bakery/goody items  :)  Amazon sells some choc. chips that are supposed to be amazing without the sugar, etc.  I haven't ordered them yet, but you might look into them (CarbSmart sugar free semi sweet choc chips) and some other items you find.  Also, if you look at the Sugarless Delight company and want recommendations on yummy items let me know cause there are many items that are wonderful.

I use Purevia as a sweetener from time to time and the Agave Nectar as well.  I don't use them a lot, but now and again  :)
