bad grades due to Crohn's

Mon, January 10, 2011 3:40 PM

My daughter was in PAs "homebound" program for her freshman year of HS where due to her Crohns she was not able to meet with the tutor in the exact time slots and for the length of time (4 hours) the tutor only had time available to come to our house. As a result, she got Fs in a few core classes. She retook them in cyberschool but the original school will not change the grades to medical withdrawals. This has significantly reduced her chance to go to a half-way decent college  (she got her first decision, which was a rejection by a school which was supposed to be her safety school). Has anyone had any experience with this or anything similar and/or have advice?

Thank you.

if 504 plan is in place, grades should be based on work completed, not work missed, as long as dr. notes back up missed school days, etc. research it in your school district.

And does she have a 504?  There's more details on 504s and education equity on this site.  She needs one to help protect her when she has to miss school.

I'm confused.  She retook the classes she failed on cyberschool or online right?  And those grades didn't change?? Did she take the online courses at a different school other than where she's enrolled/admitted?  Because taking classes online is no different in regards to the grading, than actually going to a class everyday.

If it were me or my kid, i'd fight their decision.  It's not logical and practical for them to not give her a fair grade.  When I had mono the 1st semester of college I had to leave right before finals and take, I think it was a W but I was allowed to take the finals the next semster.  There were no "f"'s.

Make sure you have all her medical documentation that you can request from her doctor.  You have every right to that material. Just be prepared and have all the necessary paper work to prove that she was sick.
Then... don't speak to those difficult miserable people in the office or over the phone, talk to her guidance counselor or whoever is above the counselors.  You'll get nowhere if you don't speak to the right people (the people that have the power to actually do something in your favor if it's reevaluated).
I hope I helped in some way.  Good luck to you guys.
