Port-a-caths and Crohns

Mon, January 24, 2011 2:50 PM

Hello, I was diagnosed a year ago with Crohns disease and after a very rough time have had a port-a-cath put in. I also have Factor V Leiden which is a genetic mutation that makes me predisposed to clotting (which happens all of the time). I have not been put on any blood thinners because I am still not in full remission. My doctors all seem to have their own opinions but no one person is making a collaborative decision. Anyone been in this situation?

Hello.... I was diagnosed with crohns/colitis in 1996... after all medications were tested, none seemed to work.... in '97 i had a total colectomy... my whole colon was removed and a "J" pouch was made inside me with good intestine... after 5 years, the internal pouch had to be redone, therefore leaving me with an ileostomy... this means i have a stoma and an external bag for waste.... wow... what a change.. was very depressed and still am... other complications include 3 hernias i am still dealing with from a major surgery in december 2010... in september of 2010 they had to insert a port-a-cath cuz all my arm veins are shot from all my hospital and emergency room stays.....
