Housing resources for homeless

Fri, July 29, 2011 10:20 PM

I have Crohn"s disease and am facing surgery for an ostomy.  I have been homeless for 6 months and can't find any resource to help me get a place to live, not even a homeless shelter (because my SSDI is over the financial limit).  Does anyone have any info about housing?

UGH! I typed a reply, and when I clicked save it took me back to the ccfa community page and the reply is nowhere to be found... so if it comes back magically and you have 2 replies from me, that is why!

When you are admitted to the hospital for your surgery, they are not allowed to discharge you without an appropriate discharge plan. There are people who work at the hospital who are to coordinate whatever care you may need once you are released, because you'll likely need a home health nurse for ostomy care teaching they will already be involved.  It might help to talk to someone at the hospital before you go in for surgery to see what they recommend now. Here's the link to a site that may help you- http://www.nhchc.org/dischargeplanning.html.

I ended up with an ileostomy in May, so if there are any questions you have specifically about your ostomy, I might be able to help.

I hope that your surgery goes well, and I hope that you end up with a good post-hospital plan.  Good luck, and take care!
