10-12 times a day!

Tue, May 06, 2008 12:51 PM

    Hello
this is my first post.  i was diagnosed with UC when i was 12 years old due to a flare up.  after 3 months of predisone i was all back to normal ever since.  i am now 26 years old and have been flaring for the past 7 months.  they started me on sulfasalzine and predisone, then after a colonoscopy they told me to drop the sulfasalzine and up my predisone while trying mesalamine enemas.  the enemas worked for the first 10-12 days but then i couldn't hold the medicine in any longer.  as soon as it went in, i had to rush to the bathroon to let it out.
I am now taking 40mg of prednisone and 50mg of imuran every day.  i've been on the imuran for 2 1/2 weeks.  i've been on some level of prednisone for the last 6 months or so.
My biggest problem now is that i have to use the restroom 10-12 times a day.  they are always emergencies and i have had several close calls in traffic or at work.  does anyone know of anything i can do to get more control over my daily bathroom trips?  also, i have been denied bathroom usage at several stores when i am out and about.  is there an ID card or something that tells merchants that i need to use the restroom due to a medical condition?  if so, where do i get one?

It's getting to the point where i don't even go out anymore - i am so embarrassed that i might have an accident.

thanks
j

I would recommend trying Bentyl.  It really calms my spastic colon.  The generic version is called Dycyclomine (sp) and you can get this generic verion at Target (& probably Wal-Mart) for only $4.  It's on that list of generics pharmacies are selling for $4.  Since it's so cheap, I would recommend atleast trying it and you're not out that much money if it doesn't work.  If I know I have to be somewhere at a certain time, I feel my colon starting to go spastic and as soon as I take a Bentyl, everything starts to calm down.  I hope this helps.  Good luck.

Hi J,

my husband has Crohns and is very ill right now.  The docs have tried him on Tramadol, which is supposed to slow things down in there.  Also ask about Bentyl.  Its an antispasmic.  Also Levsin, another antispasmic.  That's all I have for now, but see about it.  You never know what may work for you.

Truly,

Hi, don´t strees over it. I can perfectly relate to the feeling. I used to be locked in my house for I was scared that "accidents" might happened. I started carrying extra underware in my purse. I guess my only sugestion is that you take care of what you eat. though with a flare up it is hard to eat something that wont make you fly to the restroom. I avoid dairy products while on a flare up, but when your colon is really sick, nothing works but time. I used to go in between 30 and 40 times a day! I remember taht the first day I went just 20 times, my mother and I were so happy we wanted to jump up and down.

Just try to live a normal life.Avoid dairy products and drink lots of fluids. Good luck and I hope you get back on remission soon.

Hi,

I am sorry to hear about your flare and your close calls.  It is so frustrating, scary and embarrassing.  I am not sure what advice to give, have you tried taking Lomotil or Immodium with the medications when you know you might be traveling a lot of in places you may not have restrooms easily accessible?  Sometimes that helps with me.

Also, if you join the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America they send you a packet and included in it is a card you can keep in your wallet to show stores that deny you restroom privileges that you have a disease that requires you to use bathrooms and to please let you use them.  Trust me, that little card has come in quite handy and is worth the membership alone!

Good luck
