Older woman with Chrones

Thu, September 22, 2011 12:47 PM

Would like to find someone my age to discuss this problem.  I didn't get chrones until i was in my late 60's.  I am new at discussing this but I get so embarreased when I am out of my home and it hits.  How do I cope?

Hello again,

Sorry I notice didnt answer your coping question. My solutions are: wear panty liners with wings, 24/7, an extra pair of briefs and four extra liners are always in my purse. There were times when I had an extra skirt, jeans or slacks in the car for emergencies. Note what you eat and the time, then notice when you must next use the bathroom. There were times when I had a "window" of forty minutes, though usually longer. Ask your doctor about Metumucil. I know, I know, but it works for me, my doctor approves of it. In my case, the psyllium gels my diaherra. Forums such as this one are a blessing, know I'm not alone. Hope this helps.

Again, Aloha -

You can have a good life with Crohn's Disease. I'm eight months shy of my 70th birthday and was first diagnosed over forty-five years ago. Im living a dream of a good life. Respect this condition; have a good Gastroenterologist doctor you find rapport with, and take your meds faithfully. Listen to your body. Note which foods your body likes and the disease wont tolerate. Look for blood in your stools. Call the doctor. Watch the amount of food you eat, perhaps smaller more frequent meals. This disease is very, very unique in each of us. Theres an excellent book, IBD Self-Management, by Sunanda V Kane, MD, MSPH, 2010, you might want to read. Yes, at our age, we were taught to keep quiet about things like this. Thank goodness the internet, and its resources, have smashed the stigma. Do take of you. Ask anthing. Try www.ask.com with your questions, but this ccfa.org site, Mayo's site, and healthline.com are ones you can trust. Always, always ask second and third and...opinions  Aloha -

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. How long have you had Crohn's. I just recently got diagnosed in March of this year. Try to figure out what your body agrees with pertaining to food. Sometimes if you know you are going out to shop or whatever certain foods affect you differently. Banana's help me, (to not run to the bathroom) maybe the BRAT Diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. That was what is usually used for children when they have diarrhea.  This might help in an emergency. Technically they say all grains, legumes, dairy are bad for us and cause these problems. The doctors don't say this, there are people that have research this problem and found diet does matter. What meds are you on? Always plan ahead and know where the bathrooms are. I know it is sort of gross that we always have to think of our disease and about bathroom issues. I right now have the opposite problem. I feel so full and sometimes it feels like nothing wants to go all the way down after I eat or I am constipated. I worry about an obstruction (which I never had) so that is on my mind alot. Read this forum and figure out the best foods for you. Try to take out sugar, and grains out of your diet. That is what causes most of these problems. Fish, cooked veggies, fruit (don't eat the skin) and meats are good. Hope you will do better.
