Any remedies for terrible smelling Chrohns?

Tue, February 21, 2012 5:53 PM

Does anyone have any good remedies that they use to cover up the awful smell of a Crohns diarrhea episode. I won't go to other peoples house for parties or dinners because of this problem .It has a huge affect on my social life. Those of you out there with this problem know how humiliating this can be. I used to try and over look it but I found myself in too many embarrassing situations and it just wasn't worth putting myself thru it. I flush the toilet as I'm going, tried lighting matches, etc. My GI says the smell is from anorobic bacteria in the digestive tract. I have always had it with the Crohns (daily for 27 years). Any suggestions or products that you can recommend?
Don't tell me Lysol, please.
Thanks, JACKAL

One of the few good things I noticed when I started Lialda (mesalamine) two years ago was that the foul smell disappeared. It hasn't come back since.

I'm a big poo pourri fan! I also always carry around scented baby wipes in case of emergencies :)

I've also heard "just one drop" is a miracle worker for odors...it eliminates the odor..people use it who have colostomy bags. you can just drop it in the toilet and it takes care of the smell and you don't have to feel embarrassed by just masking the smell.

Also, have your doctor check for C diff infection. That is a common source of the odor and can be treated with certain antibiotics (funny because it is also caused by antibiotics!)

Probiotics actually help. Get one that has Bifidum/ Bifido. I bought a brand called "Ultimate Flora Critical Colon Bifido Max"

Try fresh wave which you can buy at bed bath & beyond. They have spray, candles, gels.. That's what they use in the hospitals too.

I have not tried it, but I heard great things about "Just One Drop".  You put a drop in the toilet bowl when you go and it supposedly eats up all of the odor.  I carry a small air freshener in my purse when I amgoing to parties where the group is small and the bathrooms limited---family gatherins...oh well they are used to me now.

Google poo pourri.  It is a natural deodorizer that I've heard good things about.   Haven't used personally.  You may want to give it a go.
