Flare up & Exercise

Wed, September 19, 2012 3:00 PM

In your experience, does exercise make your flare ups worse or do you prefer to rest your body during flares?

I'm a 3-yr UC patient.  Think I've got a flare about to begin.  In remission for a little over a year.  Hospitalized for 10 days during last flare, bad experience.

Just curious what your take is on resting vs jogging while in a flare up.

Thanks for your input!  I agree, when I was in full flare, I'd go jogging and about have a mishap every time I was out there.  So I stopped.  Then, as I was slowly going into remission, my body was so weak and beat up that I couldn't even think of going for a jog.  It was too much.  It's just one of those things, since all of us have different experiences, I was wondering how it affects others.  But I agree, jogging is rather high impact (even as slow as I am).

I hope you're on your way to remission.  Sounds like you've been at it for a long time, that sucks.

I would kill to exercise right now.  When I have a flare up (I have UC), exercise is not an option, especially jogging.  The high impact irritates my stomach really bad.  I take it as easy as I can, but its been a rocky road to recovery.  I lead an active lifestyle, working 60+hrs/week which I think may have to do with my slow recovery.  Its been six months, but I feel like I'm almost ready to go for a run.....SO CLOSE! :-D
