education-future

Fri, March 01, 2013 2:40 PM

I have several physical disabilities and illiostomy due to colitis and more health problems.Im having problems with serious intestinal swelling and in the ER again, sick.I've tried to get education but I'm having problems getting one of my disabilities accommodated for.I need a couch or very large chair because i cant sit down and cant stand up very long.I don't need to lay down.I'm terrified because I worry about my future and what is the next step?A nursing home or other?I want an education so i would not have to go into a nursing home etc. and have a life.I was denied all programs and a couch.Has anyone here gone to college and not used a state facility? Is there a way to go to school and not lose benefits if not using a state funded institution? I heard of the arts and this is supposed to be ,? ( I forgot the word I needed to use) for disabled but i don't know if a person can get a degree in it or not.Can anyone relate to this?I could use some feed back as I'm terrified for my future. I read the inspiring stories of people and their own experiences but mine is not going good. Can someone tell me how they did it, how they got where they are today?Did you go to school?I cant get a couch as I said so anyway, Thank you, P

Thank you for the reply.I appreciate all the replys and any suggestions as I'm not getting any where and not getting the help I need at places I should be getting help at.I apologize for my ignorance but what is a gi?This is related to school? Is this a guidance counselor? I feel stupid and I've been out of school for a long time. But I know I'm not stupid I just feel this way at the moment. I'm under a lot of stress right now.Unfortunately my complaint regarding my disability rights is not going good.So far they are saying there is no proof.I never went into the facility because I needed a couch and they wouldn't supply it and they are denying all this.I cant go into all of it but something doesn't seem right about all of it. If you could let me know what gi is id appreciate it. Thank you again for the help, Pam

I am sorry you are getting the run around with disability office, schools, etc.   However, I wouldn't give up so easily.   Have you tried the "talk to a specialist" tab above?   They may be able to give your facts and may have recommendations that could prove fruitful.
My daughter is only in middle school and I have to say her experience so far with her public school has been really good.  Everyone is extremely understanding and cooperative.   Under the American's with Disabilities Act, we have rights.    I just am not sure with your specific state how to go about maintaining your disability status and continue getting payments while attending school.   Where there is a will, there is a way.....don't let your dream of an education be suffocated, perhaps a social worker at your gi's office can give you some much needed guidance.

Thank you for reply. As always there is a problem when I try and get help as I did with online school.I called social security to see if benefits would be effected by going to school. I have to stress that I would not be attending a state school and i think I explained why i wasn't attending a state school because no couch was being provided for a specific disability i have so I called social security and inquired of other options and i was told i would lose benefits I'm on if I attended school in any other way other than a state school.I would be collecting money and this would effect benefits even though money would be going to the school.I don't understand this because if the state school had provided for my disability they would have received funding just as well as the online school and i would not receive the money or i don't think i would.I don't know.I think with a regular school the income goes directly to the person where as the state school the funding does not go to the person.Im in a serious situation and don't want to end up in a nursing home.Im trying to trust in God yet its very hard to do this when my world is crashing down on me.An education would really help.I would have to try for scholarship but then again benefits would be cut off I was told. This is serious and I'm tired of struggling. I'll ask financial aide but every time I ask someone something outside social security no one knows anything and i get this.I would think someone would know something regarding disability issues at a school because they deal with the disabled everyday but I was not given much help at all when i called the college and told to take online classes but you don't get any counseling or any help regarding other issues when online etc.Thank you anyway for the suggestion.

What about an on-line program?   I know many colleges offer, may be a good match for you.  This way you can take classes in the privacy of your own home at your own convenience.
Good luck!
