How do you deal with looking to the past as a precursor to the future

Hi,

My gf has had crohns for 16 years. She now has RA as a result of the crohns. She often looks to what has happened in the past as a picture to the future because it is a sense of control in the ever changing fight with crohns.

How do you not think of the past as a picture of what is to come in the future?

How do you think positive and cope with stress when you keep getting sick several times a year and not think of the next negative thing that will occur next but think positively to the future?

How do you deal with the financial stress of being sick?

Thanks in advance.

Hello. I am actually struggling with this right now. I have no idea what my future holds and with Crohn's Disease that uncertainty scares me.  I have been in remission since my surgery in Dec. 2012. However, even though I have been in remission I had a reaction to Remicade in the form of lightheadedness and weakness. Several times I could not walk without holding onto someone or something. That lasted about a month. And now, my doctor is telling me I am experiencing an irritable bowel and suggests a new diet. So, even with remission I am still struggling.

To to answer your questions, the best I do is stay focused on my dreams and goals I want to achieve, but continually remind myself of all the positive things in my life: supportive family and friends, amazing job, best dog ever, and so on.  I also find myself staying busy with work, a book to read, a new project, and etc. I don't know what my future holds, but I can control what happens in the present. So I aim to do that.
