David Garrard Commercials

Sun, December 07, 2008 6:19 PM

Over the last few years I have looked towards David Garrard as a symbol for CD inspiration.  I figure, if a NFL Quarterback can live with CD anyone can.  However, I am questioning his judgment for doing national commercials for the fried chicken chain, Zaxby’s (zaxbys.com).

I am not sure how I feel about this.  On one hand it angers me to watch one of our top champions sell fried chicken as I am going through a horrible and debilitating flare-up.  I would prefer he does ads for yogurt or other CD friendly products.  The counter point is when healthy I do love fried chicken (limited intake) and I think it’s wonderful that he has his CD in check to be able to eat Zaxby’s.

If you have not seen the commercials unfortunately they are not online but here is a link to the press release:

What do you guys think I have mixed feelings.

I also love that he does the Crohn's commercials. I think it's such a great thing for Crohn's to be getting media attention and awareness.

As far as the fried chicken commercials, good for him. It's possible that he might just be doing the commercials and not actually eating it in daily life. But even if he is able to eat fried chicken, good for him. He obviously takes care of himself and his medical condition. I also am fortunate to be in remission after many years of flares and illness. I can now eat things that I wouldn't normally be able to eat, like pizza, chocolate, and yes fried chicken. I enjoy it now while I can because I know it's possible that I will get very ill again and have to limit myself.

I think in general with Crohn's disease it is important that we don't let it become our entire lives and push ourselves to do things when we're feeling well that we normally can't do in order to live normal lives, whether it's eating a new food, going on a trip, etc.

I think his commercials show that he has crohn's, crohn's does not have him. In other words, crohn's is a part of his life but certaintly not all of it.

My son has Crohns and  now that he is responding to treatment and is  able to eat again he always asks for fried chicken.  I asked the doctor and he said it was okay, that people react to food differently. So I'm not sure how I feel about the commercial but I think one thing people like Gerard and other athletes with Crohns do is give boys and girls who love sports hope.  I keep a food and symptom diary for my son to see how food affects him and this has helped.  I did not know about the commercial until I saw your post, I am curious to see what others think.  Take care and God bless.
