Hello, My name is Heidi, Im 31 years old.. I Was Diagnosed with Chrons Disease on November 17th, 2007. Like many of you individuals with this disease are of have been on many types of different medications. Some of you have had success with a year, or years with no flares or remission. When I started getting this disease I was working full time. I had a great job with a company. Then I became so Ill I had to go on FMLA from work, because one I was always sick and I started to have to take time off. So I took the time, my employer at the time was understanding, or at least I thought they were!. They let me go because I exhausted my FMLA limit. Along with losing my job, I also lost my medical insurance. And Cobra I payed for three months, but $400.00 a month was just to much!. Now Im having severe problems getting any insurance with a preexisting condition!. I do see a Pain specialist and PCP. But everything is self pay. and getting the meds I need is very expensive, My Doctor wants me to go on disability because I can not work anymore. And my Chrons has gotten worse in the last 4 or so months, there are days I just stay in bed and cry feeling hopeless. So my question for you guys is?. Are or is anyone out there whom is on disability? or something else. Im lost But I need to do something fast!. Thank you all for listening to me vent. Im so thankful that Im not alone in this.

Thanks Heidi

Hi Heidi -

Please hang in there...things will get better.  I have been dealing with Chron's with what feels like forever.  At one time, I was in and out of hospitals for about 9 months a year.  You will find the medication that will work and get your life back.

I was diagnosed in 1999 and have been on every tx available. I had a wonderful job that I worked at for 16 years. I had to resign due to my condition last July and applied for disability. I have been denied twice and now am on the long wait for a hearing with a disability judge but have been told due to my young age (37) and education (nurse), my disability will likely be denied again. They seem to think I can be retrained to a new vocation. Seriously??? I have fecal incontinence. Daily. Sometimes several times a day. Not to mention that I have severe diarrhea that renders me in the bathroom up to 15 times a day for 15 to 45 minutes at a time, abdominal pain, joint pain, pyodermas, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, the medication I take makes me drowsy, lethargic and makes me prone to infections....thus staying away from the general population and most nursing duties. On top of this I have Sjogrens syndrome, another autoimmune disorder that has wrecked my ability to produce tears, salivate, joint problems, mental confusion.

I stay home and do nothing. It's the only place I feel safe and not humilated to defecate on myself. I can't even take my daughter to school without risking embarrassment. And they expect me to work 40 hours a week in public???

I am scared. Scared that a law judge is going to tell me I have been denied disabilty. Scared that it will take up to 2 years for him to tell me that. That I won't be able to feed my children. That I will become too big a burden for my husband. That I will have to file bankrupcy.

I have worked 2 to 3 jobs my entire life. I have never asked for help from anyone. I'm not even asking that this disabiltiy be forever just until I can get well enough to get back to a healthy place where I can work.

I didn't ask for this disease. I hate it.

Sorry to vent but I am fed up.

Anybody have any words of wisdom on disability?

I'm sorry to hear what you are going through.  I was under the impression that since you had previous health insurance, you still would qualify for new insurance after having COBRA.  ???  Maybe I'm wrong ??  i hope you find some answers to your questions!
