Feeling sick and terrible

I'm a newly wed, was diagnosed with UC in 2009. Symptoms vanished immediately with Mesalamine enemas (which were certainly not pleasant!) and I weaned myself off medication completely. By September 2011, days before my wedding was to be announced, I had my second flare up. Had a second colonoscopy to verify the earlier diagnosis and was put on 800mg Mesalamine once daily and a steroid enema. My fiance knew about my UC, but I guess he and I were under some sort of false security blanked that not taking the mesalamine tablets had caused the flare up. We got married in January 2012 in India and I moved to the US with him, when I had my third flare up. We were both devastated, away from home and family and this was not the best start to married life. I was asked to continue the Mesalamine regimen and tried the steroid enema again. Did not work, was put on prednisolone for a month and symptoms went away. June 2012, I had my fourth flare up and it is taking a terrible toll on my marriage. Hubby is trying hard to be supportive but he's finding it very difficult to accept the realities of the illness. I've just started reading about the relatively high chances of passing this on to my children and we are both scared. 6 months into my marriage and I'm terrified that UC is going to be the death of my marriage. Trying to be positive and optimistic but losing hope.

I can understand where you are coming from. I have had Crohn's for 26 yrs and have had many ups and downs. My marriage did not last, due to all the flare ups and hospitalizations, along with the messy symptoms we deal with.. I have tried all meds for Crohns and even some not for that, but, hopeing I might respond..The good news is you have a history of long term remissions. It is likely you can achieve the same with the right combination of drugs. Remicade worked well for me for about 6 months, then just stopped. At least that was six months almost symptom free. I have not found anything yet, that gives me that relief. If you haven't tried it, ask your doc about it. Its worth a shot. Good luck and God Bless.

Hi Sam0Sick,
I'm sorry about your situation. I was in a flare up of my UC this past fall/winter. Was able to achieve remission in January 2012 and so far things have been going good. Have you looked into possibly you and your husband finding a local CCFA support group to attend? That may help....
