i'm so confused. i've had UC since 1998. i have all the symptoms except one. weight. i do not lose a ton of weight. i gain or maintain. even eating only on average of 800 calories a day. im picky on what i eat and have been having a lot of symptoms lately. i've also been concerned with my weight so have been trying to lose it. following the normal uc diet i am not succeeding. im frustrated and mentally drained. emotionally spent. i have no energy anymore to fight this disease. any clue why i am having this problem? or is anyone else having this problem. i have an appt with my gastro tomorrow.

What medicine are you taking for UC? Some medicines can have the side effects of weight gain, especially steroids. Also, eating 800 calories a day could be contributing to your weight gain. If you eat too little calories, you put your body in to what is called "starvation mode;" essentially your body freaks out because it doesn't know when it will get food next, so it tries to store as much as possible because it wants to be able to be fine if you don't get food again. My suggestion is to go to a nutritionist to help you find foods that will satisfy your body while helping you lose weight. Eating multiple small meals might calm your "starvation mode" down and help you lose weight. And as an FYI, I have Crohn's so it might be different, but not everyone that has an IBD loses weight. That's only if you are flaring and your body is not absorbing anything, which is not the way to lose weight because you don't get any vitamins and you can become anemic, have brittle bones, etc.
