Bowel Resection (27 years ago) complications?

Thu, October 10, 2013 10:22 PM

Hi -
I was diagnosed with Crohn's 27 years ago when I was 12. I subsequently had a bowel resection to remove a stricture at the joining of the large and small intestines.

In general, I have been very fortunate to be symptom and medication free since that time. Occasional flare-ups, but nothing major. I have been lucky.

However, twice in the past two years I have had what I can only describe as food-poisoning like episodes. Each time I have felt relatively off during the day, followed by stomach cramping and pain and then prolonged episodes of vomiting and severe stomach pain. The first time it happened the hospital thought it was food poisoning and then though it was Crohn's related, but was never able to pinpoint anything. Two nights ago it happened again. Both times it was described as a small bowel obstruction and after a night of puking and feeling like death it cleared on it's own.

I have colonoscopies every two years and the last one did show some narrowing near the surgery site caused by scarring. The doctors this round thought that might have been the culprit.

Has anyone had experience with this type of issue? The episodes are truly terrible, albeit short lived overall. I am following up with my gastro in a few weeks.

Thanks,
--Dan

I don't know if what I have to say is similar...but anyway....i had an ileostomy done when I was 13years old due to an infected colon. At that time, 1939, they didn't know too much about bowel problems, and they left my colon, even though it was not being used, in my body. Four years later, they resected my smll intestin to my r,ectum, bypassing the colon, but once again, they left it in my body, not being used. I was 17. At that time and have had a wonderful life, career, marriage, children without any major complications. An ocassional flare up of my chrones disease, but nothing to bother me. In 2000  I started having obstructions. This caused terrific pain and vomiting. I would go to the emergency ward where they put a tube down my throat and did something, and a couple of hours later I went home. It happened about once a month and got worse each time. After the fifth or sixth time my doctor kept me in the hospital and two days later I had surgery. They went into the site where the resection was made, cleaned out the adheasians that were there and removed my colon. The doctors didn't know why it was left inside and decided it was better for me to have it removed. Since then I am completekly free of any blockage and pain. I hope this helps you in dealing with your problem......good luck!
