Choosing a surgeon

Sat, February 01, 2014 10:26 PM

Considering having a total coloectomy soon for ulcerative colitis. I've seen two surgeons. Both claim to be very experienced and competent. How do you find track records, infection rates or outcomes? Very nervous about having the surgery and want to make sure it is successful. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Pay attention to where they practice.  I think University-connected is best but there are many other good institutions.  I would go by the numbers. Go with the person who practices not too far away and experienced with the greater number of the surgery you are to have.  Meet them and get a feel.  They must mention complications if they're ANY good.

Good luck
