Traveling Thailand, Facing Severe Illnes/Colectomy Issues..At Risk?

Tue, February 25, 2014 1:04 PM

I am traveling Thailand and am currently in a city with a hospital, though I can't say how great the hospital is.  I have felt ill for 4-5 days now and it may or may not link back to the beginning of my scuba diving training.  They flagged me when I signed up because ulcer surgeries or colostomy/ileostomies pose a risk.  My surgeon faxed an approval letter and I dove.  Ever since I have been feeling worse each day.  It could be more of a flu or something, but I am hoping it isn't digestive tract specific.

Starting maybe 2-3 days ago, my poop has become very watery and actually a bit painful to push through to forcefully.  Usually, I have never had any pain from passing stools.  So this was a red flag for me.  I have barely stomached food for 3 days, but I did just put down some noodles and broth.  Very plain, but it is settling so far.  I have also been drinking many fluids.  I'm hoping this noddle dish, though small, will help me note any beneficial change in my stool once it passes later this night or tomorrow.

If it is still watery, I fear maybe I have disrupted my digestive tract from scuba diving (maybe).  I can't understand why I suddenly have pain when none has been felt in 5 year.  Besides scuba diving, could a simple flu, or Thai disease, cause that feeling?  I have been resting in my room for 2 days straight now.  I may head to the hospital tomorrow if the poop does not thicken.  Any thoughts, suggestions, similar stories, words of wisdom, words of fear?  Thanks!  I just did not want to be dealing with this while traveling and avoid having to go to a foreign hospital.  Thank you!
