Low Grade Dysplasia and Crohn's

Wed, January 21, 2015 1:51 PM

I was diagnosed with Crohn's at 16 years old (30 years ago) and have lived a relatively "normal" life, no additional hospital stays and very few flare ups...I am able to remain in remission with Imuran treatments....After my recent colonoscopy, a flat legion presented with Low Grade dysplasia.  Doc's are recommending Removal of Colon with resection on small intestine to rectum.  I am concerned about life after surgery and how this will effect my quality of living.   Anyone have any experience with this surgery and what I can expect ?

Thansk much !

It's a 2 part procedure. After the first surgery you'll have a colostomy bag with a double ileostomy. You need a couple weeks to a month to recover. If you're sexually active this will be a problem, the bags are a drag. The 2nd surgery is attaching your J-Pouch and closing the ostomy. Make sure you don't have a blockage, due to scar tissue, before you leave the hospital! If you have a blockage, you'll end up back in the emergency room. My father and I both had bad experiences, so be sooo careful. You'll have more frequent b/m's and lose 20lbs. Good luck to you, and hope this helps. I'm just giving it to you in a basic sense. Your recovery time depends on how fast your new j-pouch adapts.

thank you for your response...yes, my doctor is recommending a colectomy for low grade dysplasia found on my last colonscopy.
because it is a flat lesion, His concern is that there may be a more serious pathology looming beneath the lesion.  I am reluctant to have this surgery for fear that it will disable me.  I live a full active life and have been fortunate enough not to have any Crohn's issues that interfere with my life and work.  I was hoping someone could tell me what I could expect my life to be after the surgery.

Thanks so much for your time

Are you talking about a collectomy? If so, I had the 2 part procedure done in 2008. I can answer a lot, if not all.of your questions.
