Recovery time questions

Mon, March 07, 2016 6:54 PM

I will likely be looking at j-pouch surgery in my near future and I need to see about scheduling for time off. What kind of recovery time does each step entail? I work phone support and will be able to work from home but I was wondering how long after surgery before I will be able to do so.

I had My colon removed in 2004. I was fitted with a colostomy bag for 3 months due to complications and then they did the J pouch surgery
I was off work for 9/12 months. This was prolonged by my surgeries being spread out. I took off ample time to get back my strength and mental wellbeing. I was up and about for short periods soon after surgery, but tired easily for the first month.
I hope you manage to avoid the colostomy bag it is unpleasant.
You must learn to manage the daily conditions affecting your body after surgery. Making sure you keep hydrated properly and how to get a good nights sleep. I have found that if I take several over the counter anti diarrhea pills after eating dinner (I get them @Costco) and again an hour later that this helps bulk up and slow the stool enough by the time I go to bed that I can sleep through the night with only one bathroom trip interruption.
I Am also extremely careful of what I eat because my system is very sensitive to foods that might be a little "hinky". If food is not properly handled, left out too long or is exposed to germs you will suffer in a big way. Things that most people would not be bothered by will get to you so be careful what you eat. That is The time for RX med Lomotil. Sometimes things can be difficult & messy but you learn to cope & adapt.
If you come down with a stomach virus or food poisoning, please remember you can suffer severe de-hydration which can be very dangerous and you may need IV fluids at the hospital.

I hope you go through with the J pouch. Your life will not be normal but much improved
