Just Diagnosed with High Grade Dysplasia in the Cecum - What to do?

Pathology report reflected two benign polyps and high grade dysplasia found in the cecum. GI insists it is time to have my colon removed as I was initially diagnosed with severe UC back in 2008. After trying virtually every drug on the market over that first 2 year period (Azacol, Lialda, Flagyl, 6MP, Prednisone, etc.), I was put on Remicade w/Solumedral back in 2010 and Methotrexate was added to my treatment in 2013 for joint pain. I have been doing extremely well with no signs of any UC flares and joint pain under control. I honestly feel like I did before I was every diagnosed with UC. Just had my first colonoscopy in 8 years, at my GI's insistence, and he now tells me I need to stop my Remicade treatments and have my entire colon removed because high grade dysplasia was found in the Cecum. I also had 2 polyps that were not cancerous but he said the high grade dysplasia is a precursor to cancer which now puts me at a very high risk. Went to the surgeon he recommended on Monday for a consultation and the Surgeon agrees that long term UC patients with findings of High Grade Dysplasia should proceed with surgery as they are at high risk for cancer development. Has anyone else had to make the decision to have surgery as a result of HGD findings? Did you proceed with the surgery?

I was told severe displasia, after several years of chronic Colitis, nothing they could give me, even the heaviest steroids had no effect. Had colorectal removal 3months ago. Had J-pouch built 3 weeks ago, take down scheduled in 2 months, and then will see if all this pain, time off work, embarassment from the stoma and poop bag, was all worth while, or am i gonna be one of the 5 to 7% that have complications like pouchitis, or blockage, or whatever, and gonna be struck with this bag which i despise, hanging off me forever?Get a good surgeon, that you are comfortable with, is the best advice i can think of, because these surgeries are scary, painful, and degrading, the confidence and look of superiority in Dr. Cherns eyes as i go under, takes away my fears almost completely, and I am so reasured by her bearing, I wake up calm, and know by the way nurses and people are talking, all went well again...good luck

I am in a similar situation, I have had Colitis since 1998. I am taking Lialda and Aziophaprine. After my last colonoscopy my doctor said my colon looked great. But Tuesday morning he called me and said my cells are going into dysplasia which he said was precancerous. I meet with the doctor on the 28th to schedule my surgery. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this whole thing. Wearing a bag , having my colon removed. Its a lot to take in. I just feel that the risks of getting cancer if I don't get it removed are a lot scarier then getting it done and removing the possibility of cancer are alot better to deal with. Wearing a bag for 6 to 8 weeks feels very demoralizing to me , but its only temporary. I 'd rather live a long life without a colon then take the chance of dying to young.
