Restarting / Changing Biologics after small bowel resection

Mon, August 10, 2020 5:58 AM

I am 29 and was diagnosed with Crohn’s 11 years ago in 2009. I have been on many medications over the years, most notably 6MP 2009-2012, and Humira 2012-2020.

I have just had my first surgery in March 2020 after my worst bout with the disease in years kicked off early February. I had a small bowel resection. The doc took 18 inches of my small bowel + my ileocecal valve.  They stopped my Humira before surgery and opted not to resume it afterwards.

Here we are almost 5 months later, I am doing much better, but my GI still insists I start on a new Biologic. She initially talked about Remicade, but I was reluctant on that since I have had family members do poorly on that. We settled on Stelara mostly because it only requires the first dose to be infused at a hospital, and I can use the self-injection at home afterwards, which is something I have been used to with the Humira.

My question to you all is weather anyone else has gone from Humira to Stelara after surgery or regardless of surgery, and how was your experience with the new medication as apposed to Humira?

Thank you

Hi,

I went from Remicade to Stelara. Personally, I really like Stelara (if one can like such a thing). The only side effect I have is tiredness a couple of days after the shot. No ther side effects. I had horrible side effects on Remicade (really sore arms and hands, and eventually an allergic reaction to it). Of course that is just me and everyone reacts differently to these biologics.

I am currently debating a small bowel resection (See my post in this forum) and stayong on Stelara after it is a no brainer for me. After your surgery the biologic has a much better chance of fighting the inflamation.

Hope that helps.
