Post Surgery

 Hi, this is my first post even though I have been reading your stories for years.  I have had a bad bout with Crohn's over the past three years.  I went from no symptoms ever to full colectomy in 2.5 years.  Nothing really worked and it seemed I reacted to everything.  Good news is that I had my colectomy last February and since then I have not had any problems.  I have been working out and leading a good life.  Three days ago I started getting some pain in my abdomen.  Cramping I guess but it has me really worried.  It is no so bad that I can't function but it still hurts.  I hate the hospital and I am just a little nervous that it might be Chrohn's flaring up in my small bowel.  Has anyone had this occur?  Any advice would help.

 Hey Colorado-

You say you've had a total colectomy...so do you have a jpouch or an ostomy?

Cramping can be associated with both a jpouch or an ostomy, for different reasons, and doesn't necessarily mean you're having an IBD flare.

Give us a little more info...sometimes even something as simple as dehydration (especially if you have an ostomy) can cause stomach cramping.

(FYI..I'm an ostomate of 16 years...had a jpouch for a while too. I've had Crohn's for 23 years...and I'm only 32 !)

 Hi!

Just like you I had a total colectomy dure to my Crohn's in Dec '04.  I would consult with your doctor to see what he/she says.  I was cramping up last summer and it turned out not to be crohn's.  I was given nexium and it cleared up a week later.

 Just because you're having some pains doesn't always mean you need surgery. Some pains can be pretty normal with Crohn's,You might want to watch what you eat for a few days just to be sure. Ya know the drill: low residue, low fiber, etc.  Boring, yeah, but it does work, and gives you some peace of mind.  I've had three bowel obstructions in the past, and so I've learned the hard way to stick to the boring diet whenever I'm having symptoms. Gives me one less thing to worry about. (-;

Also, taking salmon oil or fish oil capsules can help for some patients. I've been on salmon oil caps, the Rexall brand from Wal Mart, and they've been helping. Not a cure, but it can help.

If  the pain and/or other symptoms are really severe, or keep on for a while, holler at your doctor. They might just want to adjust your meds for a while till things calm down.  Get plenty of rest, watch the diet, and try not to stress.
