Fistula and Resection Surgery

Tue, February 09, 2010 3:35 PM

Well found my vaginal fistula this morning after a very uncomfortable test. So I am now just waitng for the Dr office to call because I can not do Remicade any more so my only options are to live with it or surgery and if I choose surgery they are going to go ahead and do the resection also.

I would like any feedback you might have in regards to the fistula surgery and the resection surgery, what to expect and recovery time etc...

Thanks

I also would notice oil in my urine weird I know I just worry about it getting bigger and worse because you can pass stool through them.

(Continued from previous post)

I spent about a week recovering at the house after that.  I would highly suggest having someone with you during this time.  Mobility is limited and it is nice to have someone help you out because you really do not have a lot of energy.  Like the doctors say just be very kind to your body during this time.  I have a friend who had the surgery and did not take it slowly and he wound up back in the hospital to deal with the resulting scar tissue.

After about two weeks, the pain associated with moving around, coughing, bending, etc. was very manageable.  I was able to go back to school at that time and found that I really only struggled with my energy level.  Now a month after the surgery I am doing pretty well.  It took about two and half weeks post surgery for my bowels to "normalize" (become solid) and as long as I take my meds (just Lialda right now) I feel just fine.  I have resumed my normal activities (working out on the elliptical machine 3-4 times a week), booking it all over campus and lifting of moderately heavy objects.  I have recently felt sharp pain around the incision (which fully closed after two weeks) but my surgeon says that it is a normal part of the healing process.  I will be seeing her next week so hopefully everything will check out.

Now, I actually have a question about the vaginal fistula.  I have been experiencing a pain that mimics that of my anal fistula, but further up from my rectum.  I am worried that I might have another abcess or possibly a vaginal fistula.  What is your pain like and are there any obvious symptoms that I could use to identify a vaginal fistula?

I hope this is helpful.  I know it is a lot of information, but I thought more detail with these things is better than less.  Good luck with everything.

Hey there,

I have had to deal with both of those surgeries within the last six months so I definitely wanted to take a minute and let you know what my experience was like.  I had a confirmed anal fistula in August of last year.  The surgery went well and I felt significantly better in about a week.  However, my surgery site got infected and I ended up in the ER about two weeks after the surgery.  I have heard varying accounts of how surgeons leave the site post surgery (drains, packed with gauze, etc.)  My  surgeon left the surgery site uncovered without a drain.  I am not sure if the procedure is different for a vaginal fistula, but that is what I went through.

As far as the resection surgery, I just had that one about a month ago.  On December 30th I had about a foot of my small intestines removed, my appendix and my cecum (the top part of the colon).  I spent about six days in the hospital where my pain level, after initially waking up from the surgery, was surprisingly tolerable (probably due to the iv pain meds).  This was my first major surgery, so dealing with the catheter, the pain from the breathing tube, and the constant prodding and poking by the hospital staff was difficult.  (There's a character limit so I am going to post the rest below this)
